The TCU Student Government Association has a new president: Paige Shiring, a senior finance major from Houston. We asked Paige about her past SGA involvement, presidential goals and some of her favorite things on and off campus. Check her video from convocation online: https://youtu.be/DUbQffupdU8

What brought you to TCU?

The size of the university was a sweet spot of being large enough to enjoy an active social life while also being small enough to be seen and known. The faculty-to-student ratio was also very attractive, as I wanted to receive a challenging yet quality education. Finally, I loved the culture — game days get spirit flowing, programming on campus gives students constant entertainment and the first-year experience is unmatched.

When did you get involved in student government and why?

Freshman year, I joined student government to get involved and serve the campus. As I spent more time within the program, I quickly realized just how incredible those who serve with me are. The students who also choose to serve are some of the most interesting, passionate and genuine that I have met on campus. As a freshman I quickly developed relationships with older students, and those mentors still stick with me today.

What have your prior roles been?

As a freshman, I was legislative clerk. Sophomore year, I served as a Neeley School of Business representative. Junior year, I had the opportunity to serve as student body treasurer.

What student government accomplishments are you most proud of?

A student government accomplishment I am extremely proud of is a complete overhaul of the budget we use throughout the year. Though only a few will see it, it took ample work time and constant communication with existing and prior officers to optimize clarity and transparency. The new budget will allow for funds to be more clearly pulled, and I hope will encourage more transparency for where and how our funds are spent.

Why did you want to run for president?

My time in student government has strengthened my passion to serve the student body. TCU has given me more than I could have ever asked for — both student and professor mentors, a challenging environment to flourish and grow into a woman I am proud to be, and valuable alumni relationships that have facilitated my ability to secure a dream job. Knowing that my experience is not unique, I wanted to do what I could to give back and work to make the university even better than I found it.

What are your primary goals as president?

My overarching goals for the year are to work to revitalize and strengthen on-campus community, to support and address increasing mental and physical health issues on campus and to reinforce and support DEI efforts on campus.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be and how do you plan to overcome it?

The biggest challenge I foresee this year will be the strengthening of the on-campus and especially the first-year experience. My experience as a first-year was incredible — I was able to create lasting friendships, challenge myself and learn about my community. The impact of the pandemic has restricted much of what we are accustomed to, but I know that with some creative thinking and diligence we can create socially distanced and safe ways for the community to feel supported and engaged.

What are some other campus organizations you’re involved in?

I am a member of the Neeley Fellows, the John V. Roach Honors College, Kappa Alpha Theta and the Transaction and Investment Professional Board Program (TIP Board).

What are your goals after graduation?

After graduation, I will be working in New York with Credit Suisse in its IBCM Tech group (investment banking).

What do you love most about being a Horned Frog?

Undoubtedly, the people. I could never have imagined the quality of relationships I would build at this university. The professors are incredibly supportive and responsive, the alumni are engaged and actively willing to help, and my peers constantly push me to be the best version of myself that I can be.
