Stockton Downed by #1 Salisbury in NCAA Second Round

Salisbury, Md. – Stockton University (17-3) was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with a 22-13 defeat to No. 1 ranked Salisbury University (19-1) in the second round. The Ospreys, winners of 15 straight entering the game, stayed close to the top-ranked team in Division III throughout the first half.

Sean Haddock (Hightstown/Hightstown) led Stockton with a team-high four goals followed by Reegan Capozzoli (Wayne/Wayne Valley) with three goals. Dante Poli (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored twice for the Ospreys.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first eight minutes, goals by Poli and Ryan Anderson (Avon-by-the-Sea/Manasquan) in a span of 34 seconds pulled Stockton within 3-2. Connor Albrecht (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) answered a Sea Gulls tally with one of his own for another one-goal margin at 4-3.

Haddock struck later in the first quarter before a Salisbury goal made it 7-4 at the end of the opening period. Capozzoli began the scoring in the second quarter but the Sea Gulls quickly responded. Haddock then pumped in two markers 51 seconds apart for a 9-7 count. Salisbury countered with two goals for an 11-7 lead.

The Ospreys made one more rally try as Noam Levy-Smith (Margate/Ocean City) and Capozzoli hit the net 27 seconds apart to close the gap to 11-9. The Sea Gulls notched the final goal of the first half for a 12-9 score at the break.

The game slipped away from Stockton in the third quarter as Salisbury unleashed a five-goal barrage that created some distance at 17-9. From there, the Ospreys trailed by at least six for the rest of the game. Poli, Capozzoli, Haddock and Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury) potted Stockton's last four goals but the Ospreys fell 22-13.

Stockton goalkeeper Eric Lindskog (Montville/Montville) made 11 saves in the game. Brendan Scanlon (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) contributed two caused turnovers and two ground balls to the defensive effort.

Cross Ferrara paced Salisbury with five goals and two assists. Charlie White and Isaac Thrasher scored four goals apiece for the Sea Gulls.

Stockton finished the season with its second-highest win total in school history. The Ospreys' 17 victories were one off the school record of 18 in 2019. Stockton's 15 consecutive wins were a school record, they played an NCAA Tournament home game for the first time ever and their 26-11 triumph over UMass Boston on Wednesday was the program's second NCAA Tournament win (2022, 2019).
