Cobleskill, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team went on the road to take on SUNY Cobleskill for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday.
The Hawks (7-9) combined for 31 hits and 31 runs against the Fighting Tigers, winning game one with a score of 18-9 and game two, 13-2.
SUNY New Paltz dominated on the base paths, as the team totaled 13 stolen bases in game one including six from freshman
Justin Ortiz who also finished the day with three hits, four runs, two RBI and two walks.
The Hawks took a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first in game one and added four more runs in the third to establish a strong, 8-1 cushion. SUNY New Paltz held on from there, adding three more in the top of the fourth with Cobleskill cutting into the lead in the bottom half of the inning, 11-5.
After piling on three more in the fifth, the Hawks scored four in the sixth to cap the day.
Matthew McGee hit an RBI single to plate Justin Oritz to add to SUNY New Paltz's total.
Jesse Keshner followed with an RBI single to score
Ryan Geraghty and
Michael Boccarossa capped off the scoring with an RBI single of his own to bring home McGee.
The Hawks jumped out to a 9-0 lead in game two, scoring four in the first, two in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth. The Fighting Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but SUNY New Paltz offense continued to produce with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Boccarossa got the inning going with a one-out single.
Frank Arena reached base a batter later on an error that scored Boccarossa.
Matt Laurelli capped off the afternoon with a two RBI base hit to score
Adam Webber and Arena.
Matthew Polestino had a solid outing in game two. He started the first four innings, gave up just two hits, two earned runs and four walks with six strikeouts.
The Hawks are back on the field Saturday on the road at Oneonta in a pivotal doubleheader match up.
