James Clear on Leadership Habits

An expert on habits, decision making, and self-improvement, James Clear has been giving leadership advice since 2012. As a number one New York Times bestselling author, his book Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones has been published in more than 50 languages and has sold nearly 10 million copies. His weekly newsletter, The 3-2-1 Newsletter, has a readership of more than one million each Thursday. Needless to say, Clear has a strong foundation on the importance of creating habitual systems that allow leaders to excel in their positions and elevate their goals to help build up others around them.

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.”

In his book Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, Clear explains that it’s the systems you have in place that are imperative for achieving success.

“Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.”

Moreover, Clear explains that goal setting doesn’t necessarily help you level-up. You will only be successful if you have systems in place that make you successful. In other words, you’re only as good as your systems.

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

In his book, he also explains that once you have systems in place, it’s easier to fully enjoy the process instead of waiting until you achieve your goals. So many times, leaders don’t allow themselves to be happy or feel successful during the “in-between” or growth stages. Instead, Clear encourages readers to be content throughout the process.

“When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don’t have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running.”
