The State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Kristina Johnson, along with Extreme Networks each pulled together $10,000 in Student Emergency Funds and set up a virtual Esports Tournament, which allowed any SUNY student to participate. Students across 64 SUNY colleges and universities had the opportunity to compete in the inaugural SUNY Esport Tournament with each school allowed to enter up to two teams per game to compete in Rocket League 3v3, Fortnite Duo's and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles.

The teams were broken down into pods of three to four teams where they competed in round robin matches that would seed them for the single elimination tournament of each game. After a week of round robin, the State University of New York at New Paltz teams were very successful in pool play with one Fortnite Duo's team and one Rocket League team earning the top seed in the tournament.
