Stockton Tops DeSales 73-70 in Overtime

Center Valley, Pa. – Stockton University (3-0) played its third straight road game to open the season and outlasted DeSales University (2-1) 73-70 in overtime. The contest was a back-and-forth affair with 21 lead changes and 12 ties.

DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) was the lone Osprey in double figures with a game-high 22 points. He also snagged a team-high eight rebounds and tied for the team lead with four assists. Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) chipped in nine points and six boards.

Stockton shot 48.4 percent from the field including 7-15 (46.7%) from three-point range in the first half. The Ospreys opened up a 29-20 lead at one point and settled for a 39-34 advantage at the break. Stockton went cold in the second half, hitting just 29.4 percent from the floor and going only 1-11 (9.1%) from beyond the arc.

Campbell hit a jumper that gave Stockton a 64-61 lead with 2:42 remaining in regulation. DeSales tied the game 64-64 on a three-pointer with 2:08 left and neither team scored the rest of the way, resulting in overtime.

With the Ospreys trailing 70-69, Flanders sank two free throws to put Stockton in front 71-70 with 1:57 on the clock. No points were scored again until freshman Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) drained two key free throws to make it a three-point game with 23 seconds to play.

After a DeSales offensive foul and two missed free throws by Stockton, the Bulldogs got off a three-point attempt to tie the game in the closing seconds, but the shot was off the mark and Stockton prevailed 73-70.

Jordan Holmqvist led four DeSales players in double figures with 17 points. Elijah Eberly added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.

After three straight road games, Stockton will play its home opener and NJAC opener on November 22 when the Ospreys host Rowan University at 7:30 p.m. The game will be Stockton's fourth straight versus a 2022 NCAA Tournament opponent as well as a rematch of the last year's NJAC championship game, which the Ospreys won 95-91.
