SCOSA NEWS AND EVENTS

SCOSA BACK TO SCHOOL NEWS
While our core staff (and some of our faculty colleagues) have worked diligently throughout the Summer, we 'welcome back' our students and faculty colleagues who have been away. Classes start on Tuesday, September 6th.

We have several developments to share:

  1. SCOSA Leadership Reappointed: Stockton Provost Leamore Kahanov recently reappointed David Burdick, Ph.D., as SCOSA Director and Christine Ferri, Ph.D., as SCOSA Assistant Director for 2-year terms.  Thank you to Lisa Cox, Ph.D., for her service as Interim Assistant Director. Gina Maguire, MSW, continues in her role as Program Assistant and Coordinator of Older Adult Programs, and Trish Collins, MA, as Community Engagement Liaison.

  2. SCOSA's 2021-2022 Annual Report:  Was submitted to the Stockton Administration in mid-June.  SCOSA reports directly to Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences Marissa Levy, Ph.D.  Dean Levy's report to Academic Affairs commends our 'great progress on many of {our} governance and programmatic goals from last year," and characterizes our progress as "magnificent and to be applauded" in grant writing, program assessment, the Stockton Institute for Lifelong Learning (SILL), our involvement in the NJ Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (NJGWEP), our sponsorship of Stockton's involvement in the Age Friendly University (AFU) Global Network. and in our ability to adjust our Older Adult programming from online, to hybrid, and in-person in light of evolving public health guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We thank ALL our collaborators for helping us to succeed in 2021/22 despite staffing limitations.

  3. SCOSA IS HIRING STAFF: Speaking of staffing, we have posted in Stockton's HireTouch portal  job descriptions for two half-time  "Temporary Employment Specialist" positions we hope to fill ASAP.  We seek  an Office Assistant and a Programming Specialist. For details, and to apply for the SCOSA Office Assistant TES Position, click HERE  For details  and to apply for the SCOSA Programming TES Position, click HERE

  4. SCOSA IS HIRING STUDENT FELLOWS:  SCOSA seeks one or two Student Fellows to work with us  (6-10 hours per week) on various program initiatives.  We are particularly interested in students who can assist with our Older Adult Education, Socialization & Recreation Programs, and in our involvement in the New Jersey Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (NJGWEP) where students in small interdisciplinary teams conduct basic health screenings and then develop care plans for older adults living in senior housing complexes in Egg Harbor City and Pleasantville. To learn more about SCOSA please visit www.stockton.edu/scosa.  Hours can be flexible and specific responsibilities would be crafted to utilize the student's talents and experiences and to help them to develop as a professional.

While GERO Minors, students who have taken one or more GERO courses, or those with prior experiences working with older adults are preferred, all are invited to apply. To apply, submit your letter of interest and resume by e-mail to SCOSA Director David Burdick at David.Burdick@stockton.edu.

AGE FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY (AFU) Update
by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion; adjunct professor, Psychology & Health Science

On July 28th, SCOSA’s age-friendly university champion, Dr. Karen Rose gave a brief presentation to the South Jersey Senior Marketing group, describing the 10 Age-Friendly University principles, why age-inclusivity and diversity are important in universities and communities, and what opportunities an age-friendly focus affords.

Dr. Rose also discussed efforts at the state level, including Governor Murphy’s recent executive order establishing an Age-Friendly State Advisory Council.  This council will work to identify opportunities for creating livable communities for people of all ages in New Jersey, recommend best practices of age-friendly work, and promote community inclusion across the state.  The Governor also announced critical investments in prescription drug relief and tax cuts at the New Jersey Age-Friendly Statewide Leadership Summit held in March.  Click Here for more information on the AFU initiative.  Stockton joined the AFU Network in December, 2018, the first university in NJ to do so, and has been actively involved since 2019.

SCOSA SPONSORED OR CO-SPONSORED EVENTS
Do You Care for Someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other Cognitive Impairments? Support and Education is Coming Soon!

As reported in our August, E-News, SCOSA has received a federal contract through the Atlantic County Area Agency on Aging to provide support groups and education for caregivers of Atlantic County residents over 60 years of age who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other related dementia. The program will feature brief presentations on various topics, ranging from understanding the basics of cognitive disorders to managing challenging behavioral issues, and ‘care for the caregiver’ topics such as finding joy in caregiving, self-care for caregivers, handling the Holidays, mindfulness, the value of storytelling and therapeutic art. Also covered will be household safety, assistive technology, and legal/financial matters.  A brief question and answer period will follow each lecture, and then participants will have the opportunity to focus on their own caregiver needs and providing mutual support.

The program will be offered each Wednesday from 12:00 noon - 1:00pm starting on September 28, 2022. The program will include online (via Zoom) and in-person (at the Stockton University Campus Center) options, and will involve collaboration with other organizations in order to best serve those in need. Between SCOSA’s involved staff and our collaborators, extensive expertise and experience will be available to participants.

To express your interest in joining the program, please e-mail SCOSA@stockton.edu. Provide your name, address, and contact information. Also, indicate if your care recipient is 60 years of age or older, and if they are a resident of Atlantic County.  Include their diagnosed disorder if you know it (e.g., Alzheimer's, Vascular Dementia, Lewy-Body Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment, etc.).  You will receive a reply e-mail requesting additional information by mid-September. For additional information, please e-mail David.Burdick@stockton.edu or call 609-652-4311 and leave a clear message.

ASA Webinar: Aging Solo: Unique Considerations for a Growing Segment of the Population
Wednesday 8/24/2022    1-2pm
Online via Zoom
Register HERE

Nearly 27% of Americans older than age 65 live alone. While this population shares the same concerns and challenges of older adults who are aging with a partner or who have adult children nearby, clinicians, home health aides, social workers and senior service providers need to be alert to the issues unique to those patients and clients who are aging solo. For instance, maintaining independence; safeguarding health; fostering physical and mental activity; building a supportive network, socialization and relationships; financial planning; and having access to transportation can require more detailed and advanced planning and execution for adults aging solo.

Discover Your Irish Family History in Beyond 2022’s Virtual Record Treasury
Tuesday 8/30/2022    2:30-3:30pm
Stockton at Manahawkin, MIS 3

On June 30, 1922, the Irish Civil War began with the destruction of the Public Records Office of Ireland, located in the Four Courts building in Dublin. One casualty of this incident was the destruction of roughly 700 years of Ireland’s archival history making researching Irish family history incredibly difficult. But there is still hope! In honor of the 100-year anniversary of the explosion of the Four Courts building, the Beyond 2022 project released their Virtual Record Treasury. This all-island, International collaborative research project is a virtual reconstruction of the Public Records Office of Ireland using substitute records from over seventy repositories across the globe to replace records that were lost in addition to salvaging the records that were not completely destroyed in the blaze. Join senior librarian Elizabeth Hodges of The Genealogy Center for this first look into this new resource!

Learn about the benefits and limitations of ethnicity estimates, along with techniques to use ethnicity estimates as a tool in genealogy research. ASA Webinar: Navigating and Dementia Diagnosis and Care Needs
Wednesday 9/7/2022    1-2pm
Online via Zoom
Register HERE

Knowing the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease is important for early detection and diagnosis. Family members often are the first to notice the signs, but may struggle on how to approach their loved one about scheduling an appointment with their doctor. Once they do broach the subject, they may be met with resistance or denial. If a diagnosis is received, the individual and their family may be at a loss for what do next and what to expect for their loved one’s care needs. As professionals, it is important to help older adults and their families navigate life after a dementia diagnosis by providing them with useful information and support. Join this webinar during World Alzheimer’s Month to learn more about what to do next after a dementia diagnosis, what changes to expect and how to best care for someone living with dementia.

Older Adults Becoming Targets of Tech Support Fraud
The FBI says tech support fraud -- in which unsolicited messages via phone, email, text and pop-up messages offer to fix alleged problems with electronic devices -- is the most reported fraud among victims over age 60. Legitimate companies won't contact users in this manner regarding computer issues, officials say, and users are advised to keep their computers up to date and install ad-blocking software.  Click on the link for more details about the 8/5/2022 story Kiplinger-Tech Support Fraud Targets Seniors.
