John and Jane Q. Public Communications Contest & Poster Session “Current Issues in Public Engagement and Communication

We’re living in an unprecedented time when new and emerging technologies are transforming and reshaping our transportation future. Something is always new or non-traditional for transportation providers to communicate and promote to the public in everyday, non-technical terms they can understand. Join the Standing Technical Committee on Public Engagement and Communications for a showcase of the winning entries of five applicants to the 15th annual John and Jane Q. Public Communications Contest and how they are successfully communicating with their stakeholders about these technologies. The lectern session, Event #1288 in the TRB Annual Meeting Program, will be held on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 1:30 PM. Additional projects will be presented immediately following in a poster session, Event #1344, Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 4:00PM.

Award Winners & Poster Presenters:

  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation and their partners developed a new connected and automated vehicle (CAV) communications and engagement framework to communicate with Minnesotans about these new technologies and involve them in planning and preparing for CAVs on state roadways.
  • Tuesday Traffic Jam, a successful bi-weekly podcast about transportation by the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization, features discussions about various long-range planning goals, including technology and autonomy.
  • Partners for Automated Vehicle Education launched a series of virtual weekly panel discussions covering all aspects of automated vehicles, both to demystify the technology and explore changes the technology could bring to communities.
  • The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments in South Carolina developed a creative and highly successful video to propel its Lowcountry Rapid Transit project forward using the talents of the city’s poet laureate.
  • The Contra Costa Transportation Authority in the San Francisco Bay area used in-depth audience research to develop outreach strategies for Innovate 680, a new program using emerging technologies to improve mobility in the Interstate 680 corridor.
