On the Trail of Hidden Florida |
“As I ramble the walking paths at nearby Green Springs Park, I realize I have never seen water this color, like an emerald stretched thin,” writes G&G contributor Latria Graham. “It’s almost translucent, and magnificent live oaks hover just above.” Follow her adventures as she explores Florida’s mysterious wild core along the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop, a 260-mile patchwork of roads and trails linking the historic coastal towns of northeast-central Florida to lakes, pristine natural springs, and the cypress-lined river.

Washington State. I recently took my first trip to the Pacific Northwest, leaving behind a yard full of daffodils to play among snow-draped Douglas firs. I couldn’t help but draw a few comparisons between Washington and my home state of Georgia.

Peak views: Lifting off from Atlanta, I noticed a familiar, striking granite formation rising from the piedmont. Only one part of Stone Mountain’s name seemed accurate when, five hours later, Mount Rainier reared up outside my plane window. The ponderous, craggy stratovolcano dominates the Seattle landscape despite being a two-hour drive away.

Alpine vibes: For a friend’s birthday, we clinked a few beer steins in Leavenworth, a Bavarian hamlet that reminded me of Helen, Georgia (though the snowy Cascades are slightly more on-brand than the Southern Appalachians). Our favorite cozy corner was a third-floor booth at Icicle Brewing Company—prost!

Lovely links: Two months after claiming his green jacket at the 2015 Masters, Jordan Spieth notched a dramatic U.S. Open win at Chambers Bay outside Tacoma. That’s about the only thing this beautifully desolate, public moonscape on the Puget Sound has in common with Augusta National. A three-mile walking loop lets non-golfers enjoy the views; keep an eye out for bald eagles and even orca pods.
