Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University junior
Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) was named
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Week for his performance on Sunday. Since the NCBWA started weekly awards in 2003, Schiattarella is the first Osprey to receive one.
Schiattarella tossed a seven-inning perfect game with 14 strikeouts in a 9-0 blanking of Western New England University on March 13. The game took place in Auburndale, Fla. during Stockton's spring break trip to the Sunshine State. His perfect game was the first-ever by an Osprey and the 24th in NCAA Division III history.
Schiattarella, who also was chosen NJAC Pitcher of the Week, struck out the first eight batters that he faced and later closed the game by fanning six of the last nine. The righty notched his second win of the year, tossed his third complete game, and lowered his ERA to a minuscule 0.90.
Schiattarella has struck out 38 hitters in 20 innings pitched and has recorded double-digit strikeouts in all three of his outings thus far. He is 2-1 with two shutouts on the season.
