The movie A Christmas Story inspired the creation of The Wonder Years.

The beloved holiday movie, A Christmas Story, was released in 1983. Set in the 1940s, it featured a young boy named Ralphie who attempts to convince his parents, teacher, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun is the perfect Christmas gift.

A Christmas Story is credited with inspiring — at least in part — the TV series The Wonder Years, which ran from 1988 to 1993. Similarities include the coming-of-age theme and the use of voiceover narration, which were unheard of for a TV series at the time. Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in A Christmas Story, had a guest spot on The Wonder Years as one of Kevin Arnold's roommates on the final episode.

The Wonder Years was set in the 1960s. In addition to Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage), characters in the family dramedy included mother Norma Arnold (Alley Mills), father Jack Arnold (Dan Lauria), brother Wayne Arnold (Jason Hervey), and girlfriend Winner Cooper (Danica McKellar).

Although it wasn't an immediate ratings bonanza, The Wonder Years was a critical smash from the start. On August 28 — with only six episodes screened — it won the 1988 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.
