Stockton Pulls Away from Messiah for 18-11 Win

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (3-0) scored five straight goals overlapping the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth period to pull away from Messiah (0-3) for an 18-11 win. Dante Poli (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) led the Ospreys with four goals and three assists for seven points.
 
Peter Burke (Shamong/Seneca), Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury) and Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) each contributed three goals and an assist while Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) finished with two goals and two assists.
 
After surrendering the first two goals of the game, Stockton roared back with three straight for a 3-2 lead after one quarter. Burke and Poli hit the net 1:09 apart followed by Swedlund with the go-ahead tally.
 
Messiah tied the game 3-3 early in the second period before the Ospreys unleashed another three-goal burst on markers by Swedlund, Burke and Anderson for a 6-3 count. After Messiah closed the gap to one twice at 6-5 and 7-6, Stockton fired in three goals in the last 3:10 of the quarter for a 10-6 lead at the half. The tallies came from Joey Tiernan (Voorhees/Eastern), D'Arminio and Poli.
 
The Falcons cut the lead in half with two quick goals early in the third period but the Ospreys answered with a 4-1 spurt on scores by Anderson, D'Arminio, Tiernan and Eric Ellis (Voorhees/Eastern) for a 14-9 advantage after three.
 
Stockton broke the game open with the first three goals of the fourth quarter, two by Poli and one by Swedlund, for a commanding 17-9 lead with 7:29 to play. D'Arminio scored the final Ospreys' goal of the night with 1:37 remaining to cap the 18-11 triumph.
 
Stockton goalkeeper Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) notched the win with nine saves. Matt Thermann (Spring Lake Heights/Manasquan) won 18 of 32 faceoffs and scooped a game-high seven ground balls.
 
Stockton will be on the road on Saturday for a matchup at Elizabethtown that begins at 2 p.m.
