A legend on the Coppin State University campus, Larry Stewart takes over a program in serious need of some life.It's hard to get your basketball jersey retired at the Coppin Center, as there are only two of them: Stewart and Joe Pace, who both played in the NBA.Now, Stewart is back to run the show as the head coach of the men's basketball team, trying to return the Eagles to the glory days of when he used to roam the court.The Eagles haven't soared for a while. They had a high-profile coach in Juan Dixon, but he struggled to develop a strong culture and consistent winner. So, Coppin turned to the best player in school history. Stewart led the Eagles to the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament. He has coached at historically Black colleges and universities over the last 14 years -- and he has a trump card: Stewart played five years in the NBA."Each and every player that you speak to or recruit, or is on your team, their dream is to play professionally. And so, I've been able to accomplish that, and so I will be able to share that with them," Stewart said.He knows what it takes to win in west Baltimore."You have to speak on (winning), but you have to also understand, it's probably hard to pull up video. I discovered that," Stewart said.A resume, though, only lasts so long. Building a foundation that can survive the tumultuous world of college basketball requires the strongest of cultures. To Stewart, here's what that means."It's about love. It's about responsibility. It's about sacrificing. If you get can get 15 of those guys, with all 10 toes bought in to the culture where no one's above the program -- we're all in this together -- amazing things can happen." Stewart is jumping into the season with both feet starting on Nov. 6 at Virginia Tech. Then, on Nov. 9, Coppin hosts Towson.
