How the Office of Academic Advising supports faculty in advising efforts

As we move into a period of remote academic advising at a time when summer and fall 2020 registration is just a few weeks away, faculty may find the following FAQs regarding the support provided to them from the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) of value.

When does undergraduate registration begin?

Matriculated undergraduate registration for Fall 2020 is scheduled to begin on April 27.

What is the role of the Office of Academic Advising? How do OAA advisors partner with faculty advisors?

The OAA’s general advisors are primarily responsible for advising undeclared students, while faculty advisors are responsible for advising declared students in their respective major. OAA advisors complement the faculty advisor’s role by providing all students – declared or undeclared – with assistance in the following areas:

  • Clarification on degree requirements & academic policies
  • Academic advisement outside the major
  • Student support (e.g., Starfish, midterm evaluations)
  • Campus-wide resource referrals

Please note that OAA advisors will always refer students to their major advisor for registration clearance and for academic advisement in their major.

Who can I contact when I have an advising question?

OAA advisors serve as liaisons between the Office of Academic Advising and undergraduate programs across the College. The liaison’s role is to support faculty in their role as academic advisors.

Faculty advisors who are in need of support are encouraged to communicate directly with their designated liaison:

Students admitted through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) are advised by faculty advisors in partnership with the student’s program advisor.
