Welcome Home

The House and Room Selection application portal opens in Axess on April 3 and applications are due April 22!

  • Log in to Axess
  • Go to the My Information drop-down menu
  • From the Housing & Dining menu, select Housing & Dining Login
  • Select Apply for Undergraduate Housing and follow the prompts

Stanford uses a self-select model for autumn undergraduate housing assignments to specific houses and rooms. This way of selecting housing increases transparency in the process and gives students more agency by allowing them to make decisions in real time based on exactly what is available when it is their time to pick a house and room. Read on for important details about what you need to do in order to secure 2024-5 undergraduate housing.

New - More Choice in the Assignment Process

In late summer 2023, the provost appointed students, faculty, and staff to the Neighborhood Task Force, which was charged with recommending changes and enhancements to the undergraduate neighborhood model. The task force’s recommendations were approved by the Provost in January 2024. These changes significantly improve the options available to students in House and Room Selection.

Specifically, the task force’s changes include:

  • Upperclass students (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) are no longer required to select housing in their neighborhood.
  • In order to create sophomore communities in appropriate styles of housing, rising sophomores will select first in House and Room Selection, but they can only select from designated sophomore-priority rooms. Sophomore-priority rooms will be mostly shared rooms (one-room doubles, triples, and quads) in residence halls with a Resident Fellow. Sophomores are free to pick a sophomore-priority room in any neighborhood. Sophomores are still eligible to apply for preassignment to theme communities and may still live in Greek houses. See below for more information about sophomore-priority spaces.
  • Seniors pick after sophomores and can pick any available room in any neighborhood.
  • Juniors pick after seniors and can pick any available room in any neighborhood.
  • The maximum group size in House and Room Selection is four students. Since sophomores can only pick from sophomore-priority rooms, a sophomore cannot be in a group with a junior or senior. However, juniors and seniors who wish to live with a sophomore can attempt to secure a room with their sophomore friend at their gate time (see Groups below).
  • A small number of juniors and students with no guarantee quarters remaining may be unassigned after the first round of House and Room Selection. These students will fill vacancies that open up over the summer months. All students with guarantee quarters remaining who apply by the House and Room Selection deadline will receive a housing assignment before autumn quarter.
  • Neighborhood lines have been adjusted so that the neighborhoods are geographically contiguous. The row is now its own neighborhood, called Rowan.

House and Room Selection - How It Works

  • Submit your autumn quarter housing application in Axess by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024. On this application, you will sign the residence agreement, form a group if desired, and indicate your gender (see below for details). While the application is due on April 22, you may continue to change your group makeup until 8 a.m. PT on May 20.
  • Groups may consist of up to four students.
  • On Thursday, May 23, you will be emailed your gate time, which is the date and time you can begin selecting your house and room for next year. If you are part of a group, every member of the group will have the same gate time. Gate times are randomly assigned within each class year. Sophomores have the earliest gate times but can only select from sophomore-priority spaces (shared rooms in RF houses). Seniors have the next set of gate times, followed by juniors.  If you are in a group with a mix of class years, your gate time will be assigned based on the lowest class year. For example, a group of two seniors and a junior will receive a junior gate time
  • House and Room Selection will begin on Friday, May 24 when preassigned students select rooms within their preassigned houses. It will resume on Tuesday, May 28  and run through Friday, May 31, with gate times running from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. PT daily. House and Room Selection will close at 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 31.
  • At your gate time, log into the housing portal via Axess to see exactly which rooms are available. Select and confirm your house and room assignment. More detailed instructions on this process will be included in your gate time email.
  • You may continue going into the system to change your house and room assignment up until House and Room Selection closes at 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 31.
  • While you do not have to select your room right at your gate time, be advised that waiting will mean fewer options available to you when you do select. A small number of groups will share each gate time and the interval between gate times will be determined by the overall number of groups. Details will be included in your gate time email.
  • If you do not select a room before 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 31, you will likely remain unassigned, but you will be eligible for assignment over the summer months.

What if I’m not available at my gate time?

If you are a member of a group, any of your groupmates will be able to act as a proxy and select an assignment for you beginning at your gate time. Groups may want to appoint one person in the group to be the proxy for everyone in the group in order to make selecting easier. More information about selecting as a proxy for a groupmate will be included in your gate time email which will be sent on Thursday, May 23.

To submit your House and Room Selection application:

  • Log onto Axess
  • Go to the My Information drop-down menu
  • From the Housing & Dining menu, select Housing & Dining Login*
  • Select Apply for Undergraduate Housing and follow the prompts.
*Axess may require you to reauthenticate when selecting the Housing & Dining Login.

Sophomore-priority Spaces

As mentioned above, rising sophomores who participate in House and Room Selection will select first in House and Room Selection but will only be able to select sophomore-priority spaces. Rising sophomores should assume that all one room doubles, triples, and quads in non-theme RF residence halls will be sophomore-priority rooms. There will be no sophomore-priority spaces on the Row, in Mirrielees or EVGR-A, or in the suites.

The number and location of sophomore-priority rooms is dependent upon how many sophomores are selected to live in preassigned houses such as themes, co-ops, and Greek communities. Depending on the number of sophomores who preassign to academic themes, co-ops, and Greek houses, there may be a small number of two-room doubles in RF residence halls available as sophomore-priority spaces during House and Room Selection.

Please note that sophomore-priority does not mean sophomore-only. If there are any sophomore-priority spaces remaining after sophomores have selected, those spaces will be available for juniors and seniors. Likewise, if a sophomore in a sophomore-priority space leaves mid-year, that space could be assigned to a junior or senior.

Changes to Residences

The following residence changes will occur beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.

  • The Explore Energy theme will move from Junipero to Potter, and Potter will become a 4-class house.
  • Junipero will become a non-theme, upperclass house.
  • Arroyo will become an all-frosh house.
  • Additional space will be added to Roble by converting all 3-room doubles and 3-room triples into 3-room quads. These rooms will be sophomore-priority spaces during House and Room Selection.
  • Additional space will be added to Toyon by converting some two room doubles into two room triples and some two room triples into two room quads. These rooms will be sophomore-priority spaces during House and Room Selection.
  • The number of undergraduates housed in EVGR-A will decrease. The exact number of undergraduates in EVGR-A will depend on the number of undergraduate applications received but we estimate that floors 1-6 in EVGR-A will house undergraduates, while floors 7-10 will house graduate students.

Gender Identification

In order to make the housing assignment process more inclusive, students will be asked to select one of three gender options on their housing application.

The gender options are:

  • Male (for students who identify as male)
  • Female (for students who identify as female)
  • Non-binary/Fluid (for students who do not identify as either male or female)

The gender option you choose is up to you, and you will have the ability to change your gender identification each year when you apply for housing. Please note that you will not be able to change your gender for this year after the housing application closes on April 22. If you have concerns about your gender identification after April 22, please contact Housing Assignments.

All rooms will be coded in one of four ways.

  • Male rooms (only students who have identified as male can select these spaces)
  • Female rooms (only students who have identified as female can select these spaces)
  • Non-binary/Fluid rooms (only students who have identified as Non-binary/Fluid can select these spaces)
  • Gender inclusive (any student, regardless of their gender, can select these spaces)

When you enter the self-select system, you will only be able to see the rooms that match your gender identification and the gender inclusive rooms. For example, if you select Female as your gender identification, you will only see female rooms and gender inclusive rooms.

Any student, regardless of gender, can select a gender-inclusive room. This means a gender inclusive room could be populated with students who have different or the same genders. For example, a gender inclusive double room could be selected by a male and female student, a male and non-binary/fluid student, a female and non-binary/fluid student, two male students, two female students, or two non-binary/fluid students.

You should not select a gender inclusive room unless you are comfortable living with someone of any gender identity. Even if you select the room with a friend, if the friend cancels or moves out later, they could be replaced with a roommate of ANY gender identity.

While gender inclusive housing options will be available throughout undergraduate housing, not all houses have gender inclusive bathrooms. A list of houses with gender inclusive bathrooms is available here.

Please note that gender inclusive housing is not for couples. Undergraduate students in long-term, intimate, committed relationships are welcome to apply for couples graduate housing.

Please note that individual housing application gender data is for housing assignment use only and your specific gender selection will not flow into any non-housing systems. Anonymized and aggregated housing application gender data may be shared with Stanford Institutional Research & Decision Support (IRDS).

Groups and Roommate Finding

On your application, you will be able to form a group by clicking “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application. Groups can be composed of up to four students. If you are the first of your group to apply, you will establish a group name and password. If you are joining a group, you will enter the name and password established by the first group member to apply.

As mentioned above, since sophomores pick first in House and Room Selection but can only pick from sophomore-priority rooms, sophomores can only form groups with other sophomores. Juniors and seniors can form groups together but groups with a mix of class year cohorts will select their houses and rooms with the lowest cohort. Therefore, a group made up of juniors and seniors would select with the junior cohort.

If you are a sophomore who wishes to live in the same house as a junior or senior, you should select a sophomore priority space in a house that also has singles and two-room doubles. After selecting, let your junior/senior friend know so they can try to obtain a room in that house at their gate time. Click here to see a chart of all undergraduate residences, including the room types available in each house.

Although the deadline to apply for House and Room Selection is April 22, most students will be able to edit the group information on their housing applications until 8 a.m. on May 20. Students in groups with one or more people requesting a medical accommodation or submitting a religious observance request cannot make any group changes after April 22.

NEW THIS YEAR - ROOMMATE FINDING

This year, the House and Room Selection application is moving to a new platform, which allows for additional functionality. On your application, you will be asked to answer a series of profile questions. These questions can help you if you do not currently have a housing group and are looking to find someone with whom to form a group. While everyone is required to answer the questions, you can choose to hide this information from other students.

To use the roommate finding function, select “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application and then click “Suggest Roommates.” Based on your responses, you will see a compatibility percentage for other students who have submitted applications and chosen not to keep their profile information hidden. The number of students visible in roommate finding will increase as more students submit applications. While students’ names are not visible in roommate finding, you can see students’ gender identity and cohort, as well as their responses to the profile questions. If you would like to form a group with someone, you can send them a message through the housing system in order to introduce yourself. To check for received messages, click the hamburger menu next to Home and select “Messages.” Please note that messages sent through the housing portal are accessible to R&DE Student Housing Assignments. Please exercise caution if you mutually determine to communicate outside of the housing portal.

Coterms

Students with coterm status who are currently seniors or beyond (i.e. students who matriculated in 2020 or earlier) may apply for either graduate or undergraduate housing. They may not apply for both processes.

Coterms interested in applying for graduate housing should complete their graduate housing applications before the Wednesday, May 1, Graduate Housing Lottery application deadline. More information about the Graduate Housing Lottery is available on the graduate housing section of our website.

Coterms interested in applying for undergraduate housing should complete their undergraduate housing applications before the April 22 deadline. These students will then participate in the House and Room Selection process like all other undergraduates and will select at the same time as the seniors, if they have housing guarantee quarters remaining. Please remember that a meal plan is required in all undergraduate residences, except Mirrielees. Students who transition from undergraduate to graduate status mid-year may not be eligible to move from undergraduate to graduate housing and students will not be granted meal plan waivers due to coterm status. Students with financial need should consult Financial Aid.

Coterms who matriculated in 2020 or earlier (current seniors and beyond) are eligible to apply for graduate or undergraduate housing regardless of their tuition group. However, coterms who have conferred or will confer their undergraduate degree before autumn quarter 2024 are only eligible to apply for graduate housing. Additionally, coterms who have exhausted their undergraduate housing guarantee quarters should apply for graduate housing.

Students with coterm status who matriculated after 2020 (current juniors, sophomores, and frosh) are only eligible for undergraduate housing.

Reassignment Requests

If you are not satisfied with the room you selected, you will have an opportunity to apply for a reassignment. We anticipate receiving housing cancelations over the summer. House and Room Selection will open again for students who went through House and Room Selection in May to change their house and/or room selections from July 15 through July 19.

For students unable to find a more preferred room during the self-select reassignment period and for students who went through the medical accommodation, preassignment, or religious observance request processes, reassignment applications can be submitted through Axess beginning July 18.

To apply for reassignment in Axess:

  • Go to the My Information pull-down menu
  • From the Housing & Dining menu, select Housing & Dining Login
  • Select Apply for Reassignment
