AGENDA
9:30 AM – Registration at N10241
Cty Rd W, Malone, WI 53049
10:00 AM – Streambank Restoration with Bruce Peterson
(President of FDL Soil Health Alliance) and John Jenkins (Landowner on Pipe
Creek), Fond Du Lac County Land and Water Conservation
- We’ll
kick off the day with a scenic wagon ride to a streambank restoration
project on Bruce’s farm. Discover the efforts underway in the Pipe Creek
watershed, funded by a $364,000 grant. This project aims to stabilize
eroding streambanks, reduce sediment and phosphorus runoff into Lake
Winnebago, and ultimately improve local water quality and protect the
ecosystem. Hear from local experts and ask your questions about how these
efforts are making a difference in our community!
11:00 AM – Upland Practice: Low Disturbance Manure
Injection with Chad Tasch (Treasurer of FDL Soil Health Alliance) and
Derrick Raspor (GLRI Field Coordinator)
- Learn
why farmers need to apply manure to fields and discover how this
innovative method reduces runoff and nutrient loss, keeps nutrients in the
soil, and minimizes odor, all while improving our local water quality. See
the specialized equipment in action and hear from local farmers about the
positive outcomes they’ve experienced.
12:30 - LUNCH
1:00 – Upland Practices: Pollinator strips, Cover crops,
No-till farming, and rainfall simulator with Dale Theel (Between the Lakes
Demonstration Farmer), François Anglade (UW-Madison Researcher), Derrick
Raspor (GLRI Field Coordinator), and Jodie Weyland (Tilth Agronomy)
- Pollinator
Strips: Discover how diverse, flowering plant strips attract beneficial
insects like bees and butterflies, aid in crop pollination, reduce soil
erosion, and filter runoff. Hear firsthand from farmer Dale Theel about
his experience using these strips on his land.
- Cover
Crops: Learn about the benefits of planting cover crops between regular
crop production periods. These plants prevent soil erosion, improve soil
health, reduce runoff, and enhance biodiversity, all while supporting
sustainable farming practices.
- No-till
Farming: See how no-till farming helps maintain soil structure, reduces
erosion, and minimizes runoff, thereby protecting water quality. This
method also promotes soil health and biodiversity, contributing to overall
conservation efforts.
- Rainfall
Simulator: Watch a rainfall simulator in action and understand how
different soil and land management practices affect water interaction.
This demonstration will show how cover cropping and no-till farming can
reduce sediment runoff and improve water quality, highlighting the
importance of good soil management.
