The University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD) is an accredited state police agency, serving the UT community 24 hours a day. UTPD includes an investigative division, K-9 teams, bicycle patrol team and its own 911 Dispatch Center.
The department operates on a community-oriented policing philosophy, encouraging greater communication between police and the communities they serve. Members of the UT community are encouraged to use the District Representative interactive map to directly email an officer about any concerns.
The University Police Building (UPB) is located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr, directly east of the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

SPOTLIGHT: Captain Miller Graduates from FBI National Academy
On March 15, 2024, UTPD Captain Christopher Miller graduated from the 289th session of the FBI National Academy, in Quantico, Virginia. This is a prestigious accomplishment, as fewer than one percent of officers, nationally, have the opportunity to attend the program.
Internationally known for its academic excellence, the FBI National Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.
The 289th session consisted of 197 law enforcement officers who graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The 289th session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 47 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 23 countries, four military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations.
Shane Streepy named one of UTPD's Assistant Chiefs
On Monday, April 1, Shane Streepy was sworn-in as UTPD Assistant Chief and took his oath of office.
Assistant Chief Shane Streepy began his law enforcement career with the Austin Police Department in 2003 as a patrol officer in south central Austin. He went on to serve the Austin Police Department for 21 years. After several years on patrol, AC Streepy transitioned to the Street Response Unit, a specialized unit designed to address quality of life crimes in south Austin neighborhoods. As an officer, AC Streepy served as a field training officer (FTO), and was a member of the Special Response Team (SRT), Counter Assault Strike Team (CAST), and Critical Incident Negotiation Team. After nine years at the officer rank, AC Streepy promoted to the rank of detective and was assigned to the Organized Crime Division (OCD). Over the course of seven years, AC Streepy worked in several OCD units, to include Narcotics and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force. While a member of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, he was deputized as a Federal Task Force Officer with the FBI. AC Streepy and his colleagues were the recipients of the Meritorious Unit award for their multi-year investigation and eventual apprehension of a violent criminal enterprise responsible for the murder of a juvenile victim. Following AC Streepy’s promotion to the rank of Sergeant, he supervised officers and detectives in the Street Narcotics Unit and Tactical Intelligence Unit. While assigned to the Tactical Intelligence Unit, AC Streepy was deputized as a Lone Star Fugitive Task Force Officer with the United States Marshals Service. The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force is responsible for apprehending the most violent offenders in Central Texas. AC Streepy and the Tactical Intelligence Unit were awarded the US Marshals Service Distinguished Group Award for their innovative and progressive approach to the implementation of Body Worn Camera policies for a federal task force. Under the leadership of AC Streepy, the Tactical Intelligence Unit was recognized as the APD Unit of the Year.
Following his promotion to Lieutenant, AC Streepy simultaneously led the Special Investigations Unit, Homicide Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit, and Tactical Intelligence Unit. While a Lieutenant, AC Streepy had the privilege of supervising elite investigators tasked with complex and high profile investigations, as well as advocating for advanced technologies and training in furtherance of modern day cold case investigations.
Throughout AC Streepy’s career he has regularly taken on additional duties and projects in pursuit of improving APD and ensuring the Austin community receives the highest level of police services. These duties and projects have included union representation, staffing committees, awards committee, executive protection, and Strategic Planning. Additionally, AC Streepy served as an adjunct training instructor with expertise in subjects ranging from firearms to search warrant drafting.
As a dedicated public servant, AC Streepy has prioritized and cultivated critical partnerships with federal, state, and local enforcement agencies, as well as private sector stakeholders. His collaborative efforts have not only bolstered public safety, but also furthered the progression of innovative approaches to law enforcement that are consistent with community expectations.
AC Streepy has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), a Master of Criminal Justice from Boston University, and a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Texas (EMPL ’19). He is also a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command (Class 552), where he was awarded the Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award.
