Our campus requires newly admitted graduate and professional students to complete an online prevention training called ‘Graduate and Professional Students Preventing and Responding to Sexual and Relationship Violence.’
This course will be available January 16, 2024, and takes approximately 90-120 minutes to complete. The deadline to complete this course is February 23, 2024. Students who do not complete ‘Graduate and Professional Students Preventing and Responding to Sexual and Relationship Violence’ will not be able to register for future courses at UW-Madison until the program is complete.
The program is designed to promote the health and safety of the campus community by increasing students’ understanding of:
- Dynamics of sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating and domestic violence, and stalking
- Safe and effective prevention strategies they can use
- Available campus and community resources for confidential support
- Victim rights and reporting options
Participating in this program will equip you with tools to address violence in our campus community and contribute to safe and supportive learning environments.
New Spring 2024 students:
Newly admitted graduate or professional students are automatically enrolled in the course ‘Graduate and Professional Students Preventing and Responding to Sexual and Relationship Violence.’
Information about accessing the program will be sent out in January from the UHS Violence Prevention email service account.

Why do incoming graduate and professional students complete the program?
Over half of female graduate and professional students, one third of male graduate and professional students, and almost seventy percent of trans and gender non-conforming graduate and professional students reported experiencing sexual harassment during their time at UW–Madison. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, and dating violence are violations of the University of Wisconsin System student code of conduct and against the law. UW–Madison takes these crimes very seriously and expects all students to do the same. Knowing what red flags to look for, how to get consent, what resources are available to help victims, how to intervene, and how to help a friend are crucial for making UW–Madison a safe place for all students.
What if the content is too emotionally triggering?
We understand that the discussion of sexual assault and dating violence can be difficult for survivors of these crimes. This online course allows students to participate in this program in the privacy of their own homes or residence halls at their own pace. Will I be required to take the employee violence prevention program?
No, graduate students are not required to take the employee violence prevention program unless they are asked so by their supervisor.
How long will it take to complete?
The program will take about 90–120 minutes to complete.
When will a hold be placed on my account and how do I get it removed?
All graduate and professional students must complete program before they will be allowed to register for the following semester’s classes at UW. A registration hold will appear in the student center on or after the program deadline if a student has not yet completed the program and will not be removed until it has been completed.
