Michelle Obama on ‘leaning in:’ ‘That s–t doesn’t work all the time’

Former first lady Michelle Obama said Saturday that it’s not always enough for women to “lean in” when trying to find a balance between their marriage and career. 

“That whole ‘so you can have it all.’ Nope, not at the same time,” Obama said while speaking in Brooklyn as she promoted her book, “Becoming,” according to New York magazine. 

“That’s a lie. And it’s not always enough to lean in, because that shit doesn’t work all the time.”

{mosads}Many noted on Twitter that the the crowd erupted after hearing Obama curse. Political commentator Touré Neblett tweeted that Obama apologized before saying, “I forgot where I was for a moment!”

Obama’s memoir was released on Nov. 13 and has sold more than 2 million copies in less than a month. The publisher of the book, Penguin Random House, announced on Friday that her memoir was the best-selling hardcover book of 2018. 

During her stop in Brooklyn as part of a tour for the book, Obama spoke about balancing life and work. New York magazine reported that she said the expectation of “having it all” isn’t realistic all the time. 

She then called out the “lean in” method, which has been championed by Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg in an effort to empower women to be leaders. 

Obama on Sunday announced that she would be rescheduling two stops on her book tour in order to attend former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral. 

“It’s important to me to join the Bush family in celebrating President George H.W. Bush’s exemplary life,” she tweeted. “This will unfortunately preclude my visits to Paris and Berlin. I’ve been deeply touched by the enthusiasm for my memoir, and I’m working to reschedule my trip for next year.”
