Announcement from National News Editor Steven Ginsberg, PowerPost Editor Rachel Van Dongen and Deputy PowerPost Editor Sara Sorcher :

We’re excited to announce that Mariana Alfaro will be joining The Washington Post as a researcher for The Daily 202. Mariana will work the overnight shift helping James Hohmann and fellow researcher Joanie Greve to report and compile the most important news of the day in one compelling package.

Mariana comes to The Post from Business Insider, where she has been covering immigration and the 2020 campaign as an intern. She previously interned at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal's metro sections, covering topics as varied as the New York City police department, ICE, oyster reefs, eclipses, rats and Mayor Bill de Blasio. She has also interned for the Texas Tribune and Salvadoran newspaper La Prensa Gráfica.

Mariana grew up in El Salvador and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She served as the managing editor of The Daily Northwestern and the president of the school’s National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

She loves a good cup of tea and is currently challenging herself to read more than a book a week. Please welcome Mariana when she starts Feb. 4.
