Morehouse School of Medicine held a ceremony Friday to begin work with developers on a $52 million mixed-use expansion officials say is one of the biggest projects in Atlanta’s West End community in recent memory.

The project will consist of about 200 units of market rate multi-family housing, a 25,000 square foot medical office building, a 9,000 square foot wellness center, 2,500 square feet of retail space and a 4-level parking deck.

Construction is scheduled for completion in time for the fall 2020 semester, officials said. The school is working with the development company, Carter, and Oakwood Development.

“We are confident this new development will serve as a vibrant living and learning community that will attract and retain, particularly, students and our graduates, to come and remain in Georgia,” said Morehouse School of Medicine President Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice.

Atlanta City Councilwoman Cleta Winslow said this is the largest single mixed-use development by a college or university in the West End in her 25-year tenure on the Atlanta City Council.

“This is an extremely ambitious partnership and its location will become the flagship entrance gateway for the entire Atlanta University Center,” she said.
