Southern Surgical Association Honors Tulane Doctor Juan Duchesne

The Southern Surgical Association is one of the oldest surgical societies in the country. The association established the Shipley Award in 1957 to honor the best scientific paper presentation by a new member.

Juan C. Duchesne, MD, Professor of Surgery and Chief of Trauma, Acute Care & Critical Care Surgery, was awarded the 2021 Shipley Award from the Southern Surgical Association for the paper State Gun Law Grades and Impact on Mass Shooting Event Incidence: An 8-Year Analysis. The award was presented at the association’s 134th Annual Meeting in December of 2022.

"We were thrilled to watch Juan receive this award-recognizing his scholarship as the best scientific paper from the 2021 meeting of the Southern Surgical Association,” said Mary T. Killackey, MD, Department of Surgery Chair. “He joins a prestigious group of past winners, including our own Dr. Emad Kandil just three years ago, leading Tulane back to the forefront of academic surgery.”

"There are many research awards at many different trauma and surgery meetings, and we have been the recipient of multiple of them out there... but this one is special," said Duchesne. "The Southern Surgical Association is truly an elite group of pioneers and innovators in the surgical field. To be part or even considered to be part of the Southern Surgical Association requires hard work and palpable leadership throughout your career. To be recognized by this elite group of professionals as the award recipient is not just a compliment; it's a statement of excellence."

Dr. Duchesne is the fourth Tulane faculty member to have received this award in the 65 years since the award was established.
