From A Basement On The Hill, Elliott Smith’s final studio album, was originally released posthumously in 2004. His highest-charting release, From A Basement was met with widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike, noting the album’s expanded musical textures that nevertheless retained the welcoming and empathetic intimacy of Smith’s songwriting. Rich with swampy guitar lines and hazy vocals, From A Basement unifies the ’60s psychedelic sound often cited by Smith as a primary inspiration with his own signature stylings.1. Coast to Coast 2. For nearly five decades, Dungeons & Dragons has inspired generations of creative people to make movies, novels and, yes, music. Now that relationship is even more distinct with the release today of an album of music created by cutting-edge bands and musical acts all inspired by Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. The far-out storytelling in the world’s greatest roleplaying game’s latest offering is fertile ground for composing some of the most original songs you’ll hear this year from bands like Magic Sword, Shabazz Palaces, Califone, TEKE::TEKE and Osees. Spelljams features a double LP’s worth of tracks from artists all produced by Chris Funk, guitarist from The Decemberists who plays D&D with many folks in the music scene in Portland, Oregon. Chris Perkins, story architect at D&D and lead designer of Spelljammer, worked with Funk to bring the Flash Gordon-esque soundtrack to life. “You know what they like on the Rock of Bral?" asked Perkins, referring to a location in Spelljammer. "Rock music! The brilliant Chris Funk has assembled a motley crew of bards to create Spelljams—music inspired by our newest Spelljammer adventure, Light of Xaryxis. I encourage Dungeon Masters use Spelljams as background music during their D&D game sessions or listen to it while dreaming up future hijinks. Everyone else: enjoy the music of Wildspace!” “Helping facilitate bringing this world to life through music and the amazing artists' visions that were selected was an honor of a lifetime," said Funk. "I am of the opinion when people think of Dungeons & Dragons that there is a preconceived underscore of what these worlds might sound like. With this bold return to Spelljammer we were excited to push the boundaries deep into Wildspace, working with artists from diverse musical backgrounds that could challenge what music in the multiverse of the world’s greatest roleplaying game might sound like. Each artist was given a character or plot prompt from the storyline, then challenged to write an original composition based on Light of Xaryxis. We hope you enjoy the result!”

• KILL ROCK STARS DEBUT• LIMITED EDTION LIGHT BLUE VINYL Foxx Bodies often describes themselves as an accident. Bailey Moses, Adam Bucholz, and Matt Vanek came together in their shared home when their singer Bella Vanek asked everyone to play loud music she could scream over after she began unpacking her newly-recognized childhood abuse. While each of them had been practicing musicians from a young age, none had been in a band before Foxx Bodies. Their first show was just as unconventional as their formation, with Tucson hometown hero Lando Chill asking them to open his album release show without ever having heard them play. After scrambling to write material for their first show, they discovered that their own unrehearsed brand of surf punk struck a chord with audiences and it was clear — Foxx Bodies wasn't going anywhere. Foxx Bodies’ second album, Vixen, required thousands of dollars in therapy and medication to create. What started as another album filled with harsh memories of childhood and sexual abuse quickly evolved into a present day telling of the lead singer’s battle with various mental illnesses as she was diagnosed with them. An exploration of queer identity, the permanent impact that trauma has on the brain, and an unfiltered inside perspective on psychiatric hospitalization and borderline personality disorder can be found within these 13 tracks. 1. Shamir’s Ten is both a tribute to friendship and a communal passing of the torch. Across ten years and ten albums, he’s bent genre to his will, from the neon sheen of Ratchet to the industrial scald of Heterosexuality. Now, he steps back, lending his singular voice to songs written by friends, turning their words into something uniquely his. With live instrumentation and Allen Tate’s production, Ten is a raw, unfiltered love letter to the people who anchored him through the chaos. There’s warmth in its imperfections, catharsis in its surrender. This is the sound of an artist finally unburdened.

New Zealand born, Melbourne-based Sarah Mary Chadwick is a gifted and singular songwriter, uniquely attuned to the minutiae of human emotion, not unlike Phil Eleverum’s work as Mount Eerie and Daniel Johnston’s adventures on tape. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Chadwick’s songs are unsparing, brutal, and absolutely lovely. Eight records into her solo career, following the recent success of 2019’s The Queen Who Stole The Sky, 2020’s Please Daddy, and 2021’s Me and Ennui Are Friends, Baby, comes Messages to God, her first ever record made alongside award winning producer, Tony Epsie (oracle to The Avalanches)

For Tamar Aphek, the freedom to improvise was essential to creating the incredible ups-and-downs expressed on her solo debut, All Bets Are Off. From the machine-gun percussiveness of “Crossbow”, to the creeping desolation of “Russian Winter”, to the intimate insights of “All I Know”, the album delights in twists and turns. Commenting on jealousy and surveillance, love and compassion, anger and escape, and countless more challenges unrevealed, it’s no wonder Aphek hoped to capture “the feeling of a rollercoaster.”1.
