What is freedom? Is there a single definition that fits everyone throughout history? Discover the narratives of individuals in the history of Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort, from the first landing of Africans in 1619, the Contraband Decision of 1861, formation of the United States Colored Troops, and their unique experiences with the word freedom.

Humans have lived in and around the Yellowstone Valley for thousands of years. However, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill into law in 1872 establishing Yellowstone as the world's first National Park. This act set aside thousands of acres to be preserved for the benefit of the American people. In this program, participants will learn a short history of various Tribal Nations that call Yellowstone home and explain why Congress and President Grant established the idea of a "National Park" in the 1870s.

Located in the Sky Island region of southeast Arizona, Chiricahua National Monument was established in 1924 for the purpose of protecting its distinctive rock pinnacles. These eroded rhyolite columns and other formations are evidence of violent geological activity that continued for millions of years. The park also preserves evidence of a diverse human history including the Chiricahua Apache, Buffalo Soldiers, European American pioneers and ranchers, and the Civilian Conservation Corps. We're celebrating our centennial this year - there's never been a better time to learn about this "hidden gem!"

George Washington Carver created homemade Christmas cards for close friends, and included original artwork and photographs. As a prolific letter writer, he documented events in his life that took place near the holiday season. A park ranger will read selections from Carver's letters and will share original artwork.
