Bard College at Simon's Rock: the Early College

Faculty Forum with Manon Hutton-DeWys, Visiting Faculty in Music/Piano

Monday, November 14, 2022

Kellogg Music Center

In the second Faculty Forum of the semester, Manon will discuss some of her recent recording projects and talk about her activities as a performer.

Her first album, entitled "Soirees Musicales," was released in 2021 and includes works written in a ten year span by a group of 19th century composers who knew each other: Frederick Chopin, Clara Schumann, Fanny Hensel (nee Mendelssohn) and Johannes Brahms. Her new album, to be released in 2023, is entitled "Parallels." It contains two sets of variations, Beethoven's 32 Variations in C minor, and Copland's austere Piano Variations from 1930, and two sets of preludes by composers Ruth Crawford and Claude Debussy. Manon will also talk about her interest in the American Ultramodern movement, the subject of her dissertation and the movement to which both Copland and Crawford contributed with the works represented on "Parallels."

The short talk will be followed by performances of nocturnes by Clara Schumann and Frederick Chopin and a Q&A.

The Faculty Forum provides an opportunity to hear from our colleagues about the scholarly and creative work they do outside the classroom. In an informal setting that encourages discovery and dialogue, faculty discuss their works-in-progress or recently completed projects. All members of the Simon’s Rock community are welcome-faculty, staff, students, and friends- along with members of the general public.
