KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The University of Tennessee and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital are teaming up for the first time ever to offer a pediatric residency program.

The university’s graduate medicine school will be working with the hospital to offer students formal training in the field for the first time in nearly 25 years.

The residences will be studying family medicine, urology and general and oral surgery as part of a three-year training program.

“This partnership validates our commitment to the growing needs of our region by providing state-of-the-art health education for future pediatricians and pediatric specialists. We are thrilled to embark in this training opportunity with UTGSM to best serve our patients,” said President and CEO of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Matt C. Schaefer.

His sentiments were echoed by the school’s dean, Dr. Robert Craft.

“We are excited to partner with ETCH in the launch of a new pediatric residency, which will significantly expand our core mission of training the next generation of physicians,” Craft said. “This new endeavor deepens our longstanding relationship with ETCH and promises to improve the care of the residents of East Tennessee.”

The program is expected to kick off in July of 2027.
