NORTH ADAMS — Nearly 20 years ago, when Maxine Lyle first thought there should be a musical about step dancing, she didn’t consider herself a playwright. Or a composer. Or a lyricist.
She was a choreographer, one who had devoted much of her career to bringing step — the percussive dance form that emerged in the mid-1900s on Black college campuses — to young people.
