Dear Arts and Science community,

One of the most unique aspects of an undergraduate education at Vanderbilt is the opportunity to engage in important, cutting-edge discovery. Very few leading universities offer undergrads the chance to do meaningful work alongside world-renowned faculty in science labs, in the field, in art studios, and in archives.

At A&S, we believe that the experience of hands-on research and creative expression is vital to an arts and science education. By putting knowledge into action, applying it to a real-world setting, and knowing that your work is going to have a tangible impact is a powerful experience that solidifies, deepens, and expands a student’s education.

A&S undergraduates are an extraordinarily talented group. As a faculty member who has the pleasure of teaching undergrads every year, I am continuously astounded by their deep curiosity, sharp intellect, and insightful questions. The conversations in the classroom not only challenge me, but offer a wonderful opportunity for me to learn from these gifted individuals.

Students of this caliber are positioned not only to learn new information, but also to produce it on their own. Immersion Vanderbilt, our new graduation requirement, allows them to design an individualized experience on a topic about which they are passionate or curious. Students can take a deep dive into an area of interest by conducting research, studying abroad, completing an internship, engaging in community service, creating a piece of art, or undertaking countless other opportunities.

Just consider the following examples. A&S undergraduate students are conducting research on whale sharks in the Maldives, with the hopes of eventually advancing our understanding of climate change. They are learning about global humanitarian aid in Geneva, Switzerland by talking directly to experts in this field. They are publishing their own books of poetry as a reflection of their identity and life experiences. These are amazing accomplishments made possible by Immersion Vanderbilt and the commitment of our faculty to teaching.

These students, and many others, are diving into experiences that will change the trajectory of their careers and their lives. And they are uniquely able to do that at Vanderbilt. This opportunity to engage in meaningful research is powerful and helps make Vanderbilt a special place where all members of our community seek to make a difference.

Thank you, as always, for your support of our students, the College of Arts and Science, and Vanderbilt University.

My best,
