Top 10 Stories of 2021

The new year provides opportunities for reflection and celebration. As the Padnos College of Engineering & Computing moves into 2022, we are taking a moment to highlight the accomplishments of the past year. Here is a collection of our Top 10 PCEC News Stories from 2021. 

1. Engineering Professor and Students Earn IEEE Best Paper Award

Dr. Nabeeh Kandalaft and School of Engineering students, Brendan Beauchamp, Suvro Shahriar, and Christian Vollmers, received the Best Paper Award from IEEE for their paper, "A Low Cost sEMG Development Platform for Hand Joint Angle Acquisition."

2. School of Engineering Offers One-Year Accelerated Master's Degree

The School of Engineering at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is making completion of a Master's degree more manageable than ever with a new accelerated program for Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) students that can be completed in one year.

3. GVSU OSH Alumni Featured as Safety Celebrity by Empowering Pumps & Equipment Magazine

GVSU Occupational Safety & Health alumni, Kasey Wesley, has been featured as a Safety Celebrity by Empowering Pumps & Equipment magazine

4. STEM Alumni Give Career Talk

Four Grand Valley State University (GVSU) STEM alumni and students (three from the Padnos College of Engineering & Computing (PCEC)) shared advice about the process of graduating and finding a job with current GVSU students.

5. PCEC Faculty, Staff, and Student Honored with Pineapple Awards

We are thrilled to announce that six faculty, staff, and students in the Padnos College of Engineering & Computing received Pineapple Awards for their dedication to GVSU international student success.

6. PCEC Students Recognized for Top Academic Achievements

A number of PCEC students received awards for their academic achievements in the 2020 to 2021 school year. 

7. Professional Science Masters Students Featured in 2021 Graduate Showcase

Grand Valley State University (GVSU) graduate students have an opportunity to showcase their work at the annual Graduate Showcase; an event offered by the Graduate School and the Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence.

8. Engineering Students Receive Prestigious Scholarships from Autocam Medical

Two outstanding engineering students, Jenna Doyle and Patrick Schwab, were selected by Autocam Medical as scholarship recipients and given the opportunity to complete their industry-sponsored co-op placements with the medical device manufacturing company.

9. Prototype of Medical Device Used for Screening Tests Developed by aMDI Students, Staff

Students and staff members at Grand Valley's applied Medical Device Institute (aMDI) developed a working prototype of a scope that would improve screening tests for women, like a pap smear.

10. GVSU Data Science Society Hosts Data Science Competition

In May of 2021, the Data Science Society hosted a Data Science contest that ran from May 2 to May 30, sponsored by Service Express Inc., a local Grand Rapids company, and SAS. Service Express Inc. also hosted the data set used in the competition.
