SummerWorks Internships

Get to know us!

Local youth ages 16-24 can apply for a paid summer internship at the City. Through our partnership with the SummerWorks program, City internships typically last 160 hours and take place between July and August.

Fire Cadets

Motivated individuals develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility skills while exploring the firefighting profession.

Once qualified, Cadets can respond to emergency calls in support roles and perform non-emergency tasks according to their training.

Engineering Internships

The City provides internships for students studying civil and environmental engineering.

We partner with Portland State University’s Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP).

MECOP provides two, six-month paid internships for Oregon State University (OSU); Portland State University (PSU); Oregon Tech (OT); and University of Portland (UP) students in various engineering programs.

  • Students apply their sophomore year near the end of March, with interviews in May. This process is known as Selection.
  • Students selected for the program find out over the summer.
  • Placement occurs the end of January of their junior and senior year.
