How do “protect‑the‑kids” laws shape what everyone can read online? Not sure? Katherine Klosek's latest article in #ThePoliticalLibrarian explores this question and more. She takes readers on a deep dive, tracing the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and today’s state‑level bills that use vague terms such as “harmful to minors” to justify mandatory filters—often overblocking constitutionally protected #FreeSpeech. Klosek also offers a practical framework to help librarians evaluate new legislation and defend intellectual freedom while still promoting online safety. It’s a worthwhile read for policy teams, library leaders, and anyone tracking digital‑rights trends. #ARLAdvocacy

🚀 Curious about how machine-actionable data management plans (DMPs) can transform research at your institution? Have you heard the term “machine actionable” but aren’t quite sure what it means or why it matters? Looking for innovative ways to ease the burden on researchers and administrators? Join us for a free webinar series exploring real-world projects from U.S. institutions that piloted cutting-edge, machine-actionable DMPs. Led by the California Digital Library (CDL) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Machine Actionable Plans (MAP) Pilot initiative empowered universities to: ✅ Improve research and IT system integration ✅ Streamline compliance and best practice adoption ✅ Enhance the usability of DMP tools This series is designed for: 📚 Librarians 💼 Research administrators 🛠️ Data managers & IT professionals 🔐 Information security teams 💡 Get inspired by what institutions did, how they did it, and what they learned. Technical sessions will also explore the DMP Tool API and practical implementation tips. 📄 Read the one-page overview or watch the intro video before joining. 🔗 [https://lnkd.in/eCJz3Gz7] #DataManagement #OpenScience #MachineActionableDMPs #ResearchSupport #HigherEdInnovation #ARL #CDL #MAPPilot #IMLS #ARLUpdates

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Clifford Lynch, a visionary leader in the field of networked information and libraries, and the esteemed executive director of CNI since 1997. He has left an indelible mark on the information technology, higher education, and library communities. Known for his kindness, warmth, and humble disposition, Lynch was highly skilled at fostering connections across organizations, sectors, and professions. His tireless commitment and visionary leadership will have an enduring impact and will continue to inspire future generations. In response to President Trump's executive order on American history, ARL Executive Director Andrew Pace said, “Access to knowledge is a cornerstone of a healthy, informed society. Smithsonian scientists, historians, archivists, librarians, and museum professionals conduct leading scholarship and steward extraordinary collections in service of public engagement and education. As in all great libraries and museums, these professionals help students and lifelong learners navigate sources of information, evaluate information for integrity, and provide a platform for exploring complex stories. These professionals and the millions of visitors to these public spaces should be free to teach and learn without political interference.” Read more in our news item linked below. #NewsYouCanUse #ARLResponse

Today, we're shining a spotlight on Marcel LaFlamme's latest blog for the #ARLRepertoires series, which highlights Duana Fullwiley's 2024 book on #race and #genome science from University of California Press. Takeaways for library leaders include the need to consider both the upstream assumptions and downstream effects of the scholarship that libraries support. Read the full post via ARL's website. https://lnkd.in/eUeym9JA
As 23andMe gets sold off, Duana Fullwiley's book shows how race gets encoded in the categories that structure genome science and why libraries should ensure that research impact services retain a critical outlook. The latest in my Repertoires series for the Association of Research Libraries! https://lnkd.in/eUeym9JA
