GEW Launch & Entrepreneurial State of the Union

On Monday, November 16th at 5pm, for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020 presented by Western Health Advantage, we are excited to bring you an Entrepreneurial State of the Union, discussing our region's innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem! This event is set to launch us into a full week of events, workshops, and pitch competitions.

This virtual event will highlight a featured speaker, Ian Hathway, in a fireside chat format as well as will elevate a distinguished panel consisting of a mix of entrepreneurs, investors, and ecosystem leaders. The discussion will highlight the different actors of the Sacramento entrepreneurial ecosystem and how they connect to grow our region's entrepreneurial and innovation community.

The Future Landscape of Female-led Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Join us on Wednesday, November 18th at 4pm to celebrate the culmination of the FourthWave 2020 cohort while engaging in a discussion about the future of women in leadership!

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020, the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is excited to bring to you the culmination of the 17-week long FourthWave accelerator journey. This will include a celebration of our cohort of female founders who will lead a conversation about the Future Landscape of Women-led Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

This event will feature our 13-female founders who invested the last 17 weeks in developing their leadership skills, addressing gaps in their business, and preparing for funding. We want to celebrate these amazing founders and those involved in making this process a reality while discussing the Future Landscape of Women-led Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

We have brought together a distinguished panel of female leaders who will share their experience and vision for a women-led innovation and entrepreneurial landscape.

Spark Venture Competition!

The Spark Venture Competition in Sacramento is an annual venture competition hosted by the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Sacramento State for business or social impact ventures during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Join us on Thurday, Nov. 19th at 4 pm to hear our 10 finalists pitch their venture in front of our panel of judges.

Prizes for two tracks:  For-Profit and Social Ventures:
- 1st Place $7,500 for each track

Testing Business Ideas with David Bland

On Monday, November 16th at 2-3pm, the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is excited to bring you an opportunity to learn from the author of Testing Business Ideas as well as Founder and CEO of PrecoilDavid Bland.

Testing Business Ideas:

Building on the best selling Strategyzer books, David J Bland and Alex Osterwalder curated a list of experiments for people who are stuck Testing Business Ideas. They identified three major themes from design thinking and applied them to rapid experimentation. Desirability describes whether or not people want the solution. Viability addresses if you can create a sustainable business with the solution. Feasibility dives into the steps to run the infrastructure. In this talk, David will describe the principles behind Testing Business Ideas and facilitate an interactive session on sequencing experiments.

About the Speaker:

David Bland, CEO and Founder of Precoil

David helps people test business ideas. He’s the co-author of Testing Business Ideas with Alex Osterwalder. David pioneered GE FastWorks with Eric Ries, coached emerging product teams at Adobe and even helped Toyota apply lean startup practices. Before his transition into consulting, David spent over 10 years of his career at technology startups. He stays connected to the startup scene through his work at several Silicon Valley accelerators.

On Tuesday, November 17th at 1-2pm,the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. is excited to bring you an opportunity to learn from the creator of the Lean Canvas and founder of LEANSTACKAsh Maurya. In this workshop, you will explore the entrepreneurial mindset and how it starts with a LOVE for the PROBLEM.

Ash Maurya is the author of two bestselling books “Running Lean” and “Scaling Lean”, and is also the creator of the highly popular one-page business modeling tool “Lean Canvas”.

As the inventor of the Rapid Ramen Bowl, he successfully pitched his invention on Shark Tank in 2013, and secured an on-air deal with Dallas Maverick’s owner Mark Cuban. Building Company Culture Workshop 101 - Featuring Author Josh Levine

On Wednesday, November 18th, 11-12pm, the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is excited to bring you an opportunity to learn from the creator of the Culture Canvas as well as the author and owner of Great Mondays, Josh Levine. In this 101 workshop, you will explore the power in designing a company culture that employees love! This introductory session on company culture is to set the stage of what culture is and identify the core components of building company culture.

Science Entrepreneur - Abhita Batra, CEO of Otomagnetics

For Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020 presented by Western Health Advantage, we are excited to bring you a conversation with Ms. Abhita Batra, MS, MBA the CEO of Otomagnetics as well as Founder and Managing Director of Advanced Biopharma Consulting. This event on November 17th from 2 - 3:30pm, is brought to you in partnership with the College of Natural Science and Mathematics as well as the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Ms. Abhita Batra, MS, MBA, serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Director at Otomagnetics. Abhita is also the Founder and Managing Director of Advanced Biopharma Consulting (ABC), a strategic advisory firm that offers business development and commercialization services to life science companies. Previously, she served as the Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at Admac Group of Companies, wherein she managed a product portfolio encompassing 150 generics. She is a co-founder and former COO of Navya, a biotechnology company developing and commercializing PHF for the destruction of solid tumors.

Abhita has raised over $100M for companies in the biotech & pharma space and is an advisor to several life sciences startups and funds. Abhita completed her Global Executive MBA at UCLA Anderson and NUS, and has a Masters in Biotechnology with a specialization in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. Sustainable Social Impact

 Join us on November 17th from 4-5 pm during Global Entrepreneurship Week for a discussion with inspiring nonprofit and startup founders, funders, and policy experts to explore innovative approaches social impact. 

From climate change and social justice to affordable housing and healthcare, today’s pressing challenges, in many ways, are a result of yesterday’s failed “solutions.” Catalyzing positive change in our world will require a new approach to problem solving that embraces innovative thinking, creative cross sector collaborations, and informed policies.  This event is brought to you in partnership with the College of Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Studies at Sacramento State, William Jessup University and the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Join us for a discussion with a panel of inspiring and impact driven non-profit and startup founders, funders and policy experts to explore new approaches to driving change. We’ll examine various business models, talk about the importance of financial sustainability and the role of public policy, and touch on how outcomes can be defined and measured to understand true impact and return on investment.

Entrepreneur #MadeAtSacState - Shadi Khattab, CEO of Onit Coffee

On November 18th, 12-1pm, as part of celebrating GEW, we are excited to bring you a conversation with Shadi Khattab the CEO of Onit Coffee and the COO of Precision M.D. This event is brought to you in partnership with the College of Health and Human Services at Sacramento State as well as the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Shadi Khattab, a 25-year-old immigrant from the war-torn country of Syria decided to manifest his dream to build the next major coffee franchise in the greater Sacramento area. After falling in love with the human to human interaction of another major coffee franchise in Sacramento called Dutch Bros Coffee, Shadi set out to build a beautifully diverse culture to also create that human to human interaction with customers and treat them like family.

Shadi is also the COO of Precision MD Cosmetic Surgery Center, one of the top cosmetic centers in the greater Sacramento area with over 80 plus services. Ranging from fat reduction, beauty enhancement, recovery, and mens/womens health procedures.

Shadi leverages his social media platform of 84K Instagram followers to "drive" people to Onit Coffee, which is a local minority-owned local business that is Sacramento proud and their motto is "impacting lives one cup at a time."

The Future of Education after COVID-19

Join us on November 19th at 9:30 am to learn about the Future of Education after COVID-19 from a panel of distinguished educators and innovators.

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020, presented by Western Health Advantage, we are excited to bring you a panel discussion exploring the Future of Education after COVID-19! This discussion is brought to you in partnership with the College of Education and the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

The panelists will address the lessons learned from the emergency transition to online teaching on a massive scale, and its long term consequences for both K-12 and Higher Education. They will also examine the consequences of the financial shock to higher education, and its implications for universities’ long-term survival. The panel will consider the positive carry-over from the pandemic situation, and policies and practices needed to maximize the positive consequences and mitigate the negative ones.

Speed Mentoring!

Mentor Sacramento Office Hours Sprint during Global Entrepreneurship Week!

The Mentor Sacramento Office Hours Sprint is an event during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020 where you have an opportunity as an early-stage entrepreneur and/or startups to gain invaluable expert advice and connections to solve nagging issues in their ventures.

The purpose of Mentor Sacramento Office Hours Sprint is to further connect startup founders and mentors, prove the value of mentorship, and establish Mentor Sacramento as a go to platform to connect.

Participants in this event on November 19th from 11-12:30pm will have the opportunity to meet in three 15-minute sprint sessions with mentors who are investors, advisors, subject matter experts, and former entrepreneurs.

  • For early-stage entrepreneurs and startups nothing is more valuable than expert advice, at the right time. This is the purpose of Mentor Sacramento Office Hours Sprint. Think of speed dating for startup founders and mentors.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to meet with several expert mentors, investors, advisors, subject matter experts, and former entrepreneurs. In 15-minute sprint sessions, founders will provide detail on their company and ask nagging questions they have.
  • Founders will have the opportunity to get expert feedback quickly and from a variety of sources and backgrounds - something that is rare to find in one hour.

An Innovation and Entrepreneurial Mindset: Featuring Amy Tong

We are excited to bring to you during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020 presented by Western Health Advantage a conversation with Amy Tong, State Chief Information Officer and California Department of Technology Director appointee by Governor Gavin Newsome. This event is brought to you in partnership with the College of Business Administration as well as the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Amy Tong was reappointed as State Chief Information Officer (CIO) and California Department of Technology (CDT) Director by Governor Gavin Newsom to continue the statewide leadership she has exhibited since her original appointment by Governor Jerry Brown in 2016. In these pivotal roles, Amy, whose goal is to improve the State’s technology performance as an investment in its future, advises the Governor on the strategic management of the state's technology resources. She provides the administration with best approaches to implement state technology-related strategic plans, policies, standards, and enterprise architecture while minimizing redundancy and cost for efficiency. A champion of user-centered design approach, her direct actions and focused leadership have been instrumental in modernizing the State’s project delivery, technology procurement, Cloud Smart adoption, open data, workforce development pipeline and cybersecurity measures.

Amy gained her Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems and a Master of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento.

Our featured speaker, Romaine Taylor, is the founder and CEO of EZ Vibe. He was born in Jamaica and migrated to California in his childhood. He joined the Navy after high school and then received his bachelor's in Business: Entrepreneurship, International Business, Management & Marketing from Sacramento State. Join us every other week for inspiration, networking and knowledge! Connections is for aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs—and everyone who wants to gain valuable business and leadership skills and experiences through the UC Davis Big Bang! and Little Bang! competitions.

We'll start each Connections with an icebreaker to help you grow your Aggie Innovators community. You'll meet people outside your major or field of study—a great way to start to build an interdisciplinary team with a diversity of strengths and knowledge.

Near peer Christy Serrato, founder and CEO of PairAnything, will give her startup's pitch, share her experience in the Big Bang! Business Competition and Little Bang! Poster Competition, and offer real-world advice for getting the most out of the workshops and the competitions.

Bring a bag lunch and zoom in ready to engage and grow with fellow innovators from across the UC Davis campus and throughout California.

Little Bang! Poster Competition - Viewing and Awards

On Thursday, November 19, 6 -8pm, view the poster entries in our first Little Bang! competition of the year—and see who wins up to $6,500 in total award money.

The Little Bang! Poster Competition is an opportunity for currently enrolled students—from high school to Ph.D.—to define their business idea and communicate it concisely and effectively using a poster.
Join us to view the posters and to see who wins the following awards:

  • Up to 20 $250 awards
  • Up to one $500 Venture Well / TEAM BioInnovation award
  • Up to two $250 Global Sustainability & Social Innovation Awards, sponsored by Blackstone LaunchPad and Techstars

GEW to build on Carlsen Center's role as hub for resources

Cameron Law’s role as the community organizer for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2020 (GEW) – scheduled for Monday, Nov. 16, through Friday, Nov. 20 – puts Sacramento State squarely in the regional spotlight.

For this year’s community-wide GEW, Law, executive director of Sac State’s Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, has lined up 22 compelling events, from a regional pitch competition to workshops led by internationally recognized speakers, and panel discussions with regional entrepreneurs and leaders.

All activities for GEW, presented by Western Health Advantage (WHA), are virtual and are free to attend.

“Especially as we cope with a pandemic that has cleared our campus of almost all in-person activity, Sacramento State needs innovation,” University President Robert S. Nelsen said.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week is happening at the right moment, and I look forward to being inspired by the creative and critical thinkers in our community.”
