Program Overview

Providing Critical Resources for adults 18+ in the Greater Philadelphia Region

Comprehensive Drug and Alcohol Assessments

Therapists trained in substance use disorders conduct comprehensive assessments following criteria laid out by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Based on the results of that assessment, the therapist meets with the patient (and family members, if appropriate) to discuss the appropriate level of care and an individualized treatment plan.

Intensive Outpatient Program

This co-ed program is designed for adults who are coming from the community, detox, or residential treatment. It offers structure with flexibility so that patients can keep their work and/or school and personal schedules while in treatment. The core component of the program is group therapy. An experienced outpatient therapist leads three group therapy sessions weekly. Two sessions are held in person at our office and the third is held virtually. Those sessions include:

  • Psychoeducation about addiction, prevention, and recovery
  • Education on family systems, healthy boundaries, effective communication, coping, and other critical skills
  • Experiential and process-based therapeutic techniques

The program also includes:

  • Monthly individual therapy sessions, with additional sessions as clinically indicated (Sessions can be held virtually if clinically appropriate)
  • Family support and education
  • Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services: Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) may be recommended by clinical staff to be assessed by the physician or assigned medical fellow to further support substance use treatment. MAT medications may include Buprenorphine (Sublocade, Suboxone, Subutex) or Naltrexone (Vivitrol).

Psychiatric evaluations and medication management provided by Caron Philadelphia's medical director as needed

Individual and Family Counseling

With the undivided attention that one-on-one sessions with an addiction therapist provide, patients receive support and guidance tailored to their needs. The therapist guides the patient as they work through issues related to substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders that may be impacting their addiction recovery. We use a variety of psychotherapy approaches to best understand, guide, and support our patients. The focus and depth that individual counseling offers can help patients build a stronger foundation for lasting recovery.

Family members can also meet with a therapist to identify, discuss, and address any mental health and behavioral health issues related to how they have been impacted by the patient’s alcohol or drug use.

Call now to discuss a session.

Trauma Services

Adult trauma-focused group: The group therapy approach to treating trauma is supported in the research as it allows participants a sense of commonality, which we know is a central healing component. Group members become empowered as they combat shame and find value and acceptance along with new insight, skills, and behaviors. Patients will focus on the effect of their past trauma on their current life and how it may intersect with other behaviors, including substance use. We utilize psychoeducation on a variety of trauma-related topics as well as expressive art and trauma-informed experiential therapy to provide a safe and holistic approach to treatment.

Individual therapy: This may be included in a patient’s treatment plan as a stand-alone component or as part of a patient’s trauma group programming. Our trauma clinicians are certified trauma professionals or certified clinical trauma professionals. Among them, they have a variety of training and certifications in their respective modalities, which include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), internal family systems (IFS), racial trauma, expressive art, and trauma-informed experiential therapy (psychodrama, sociometry, and adventure-based counseling).

Addiction Recovery Maintenance Group

Patients learn coping skills, good self-care, and how to deal with emotions and solve problems in everyday life as a way to further facilitate long-term sobriety.

Building and Maintaining Recovery Virtual Support Group

Under the guidance of alumni and other facilitators, this group focuses on practical skills for living in recovery. Held virtually, the group is open to individuals in all stages of recovery who are looking to continue to build and grow their recovery journey, including:

  • Caron alumni who are looking for additional support and connection
  • Patients from Caron inpatient treatment programs
  • Patients who have completed other treatment programs

Family Education and Support

Parent and family support groups are for families impacted by alcohol addiction, drug abuse, and related behaviors. They provide confidential, safe places for finding resources, networking opportunities, encouragement, and hope. Support group members help each other and welcome new family members and parents. In building a supportive network, members form strong bonds and ties with each other, opening opportunities for friendships to take root.
