SUNY New Paltz Men's Lacrosse 2021 Season Recap

6/1/2021 10:20:00 AM

In what they hoped would be their first full season, the State University of New York at New Paltz's men's lacrosse team only managed seven games in 2021 after a 2-2 record in their inaugural 2020 season. This year proved a tough one to say the least, with the team taking their lumps early on after finishing the year 0-7 overall, but showed growth heading into what hopes to be its first full season in 2022.

In all, the team only had two postponements, March 26 against Plattsburgh and April 2 at Potsdam. The Hawks struggled throughout, giving up at least double digits in all but one contest. They opened the year with a tight 9-6 loss to Utica College, and concluded it with a 13-5 loss to SUNY Oneonta. Their closest game was that 9-6 loss to start the year.

Second-year attack Ryan Scully led the team in points with 15 despite appearing in just four of seven games, with fellow sophomore attack Thomas Armetta the only other Hawk to finish the season with double digit points, totaling 11 in just three games played. Six of the team's season high totals came against the Bears in their April 5 game. The Hawks tallied 15 points, eight goals, seven assists, 22 saves, 41 ground balls and 23 clears in the contest.

Despite the tough season, there is an encouraging youth movement with the team, as they only have one graduating senior in short-stick midfielder Greg Gurello. SUNY New Paltz has 11 student-athletes who will be sophomores next year, with 13 juniors returning, including Armetta and Scully. Midfielder Jozef Harvan, defenseman/midfielder Dylan Fraser, and attack Justin Pollak will be seniors in 2021-2022.
