SCOSA NEWS AND EVENTS

ALZHEIMER'S CAREGIVER EDUCATION & SUPPORT
We are pleased to announce that SCOSA has received a federal contract through the Atlantic County Area Agency on Aging to provide education and support groups for Atlantic County residents providing care to individuals with Alzheimer's disease. We hope that the program will start in September, will include online and face-to-face components, and will involve collaboration with other organizations in order to best serve those in need.  The program is spearheaded by SCOSA professors including director Dave Burdick, assistant director Christine Ferri, service chair Christine Gayda-Chelder and TES Karen Rose.  SCOSA's Older Adult Programs cooredinator Gina Maguire wrote our successful proposal with input from Dave Burdick. Between our project leaders and anticipated collaborators, we will deploy extensive expertise to the program.  For additional information and to be added to a contact list for the program, please e-mail David.Burdick@stockton.edu or call 609-652-4311 and leave a clear message.

STOCKTON AGE FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY (AFU) COLUMN

by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion; adjunct professor, Psychology & Health Science

Happiness… something difficult to describe, but you know it when you see or feel it.  In The Atlantic, Arthur Brooks explores the question of what happens to happiness as we age using the results of a prospective, longitudinal study that began in the 1930’s called the Harvard Study of Adult Development.  Participants have now been studied for more than 80 years yielding a treasure-trove of valuable insights. With respect to happiness, patterns have emerged that do not necessarily point to decreases in happiness in later life—as ageist stereotypes might lead one to believe.
Researchers found a great deal of variation in happiness in older adults with two extremes:  happy-well - those high in physical, mental and life satisfaction, and sad-sick - those below average in physical health, mental health, and life satisfaction. Those in the happy-well group, in comparison to those in the sad-sick group, tended to have resources and habits found to be correlated with later life happiness. Yes, they were more likely to have resources that are not under an individual’s control such as generational wealth, a happy childhood, and ancestors who had lived long lives, but they were also more likely to practice habits that are under one’s control.

Current advice on cultivating happiness reflects these seven habits: 1) don’t smoke, 2) watch your drinking, 3) maintain a healthy body weight, 4) prioritize movement in your life, 5) practice healthy coping mechanisms to deal with stress earlier in life rather than later, 6) keep learning, and 7) do the work to cultivate, stable, long-term relationships in life. According to Robert Waldinger, current director of the Harvard study, the most important habit is the last one, “well-being can be built—and the best building blocks are good, warm relationships.”  To read more, go to The Atlantic (July 2022)
Turning to efforts to cultivating institutional strategies that support age-friendly universities, AFU headquarters at Dublin City University, Ireland recently informed members of a new publication titled “A tool for developing guidelines for institutional policies: a 60 indicator inventory for assessing the age-friendliness of a university.”  The article, which appears in the latest issue of Educational Gerontology, involved collaboration among researchers from Asia, Europe and North America.

Wednesday 8/24/2022 1-2pm
Online via Zoom

Register HERE
Nearly 27% of Americans older than age 65 live alone. While this population shares the same concerns and challenges of older adults who are aging with a partner or who have adult children nearby, clinicians, home health aides, social workers and senior service providers need to be alert to the issues unique to those patients and clients who are aging solo. For instance, maintaining independence; safeguarding health; fostering physical and mental activity; building a supportive network, socialization and relationships; financial planning; and having access to transportation can require more detailed and advanced planning and execution for adults aging solo.
