Albina Library

Closed:  March 18, 2023
Reopening: Spring 2025
Nearby libraries for services during closure: Kenton Library, Hollywood Library, Northwest Library

Albina Library will be renovated and expanded, resulting in 30,000 square feet of space. The library will grow to be one of the largest in the county while keeping the historic Carnegie building on Knott Street. 

New features:

  • Outdoor courtyard for community members to relax and connect

  • Community art installations
  • A large, dedicated children’s space

Fairview-Columbia Library

Closed: January 19, 2024
Reopening: Spring/Summer 2024
Nearby libraries for services during closure: Gresham Library and Rockwood Library

Fairview-Columbia will undergo an interior refresh.

New features:

  • New comfortable seating for kids, adults, and groups
  • An inviting children’s area 
  • Check-in technology for faster access to library materials
  • A Tech Bar which provides an area for patrons to use the copy machine, scanner and computers
  • Fresh paint and new carpet for an updated, inviting experience

Hillsdale Library

Closed: March 3, 2024
Reopening: Summer 2024
Nearby libraries for services during closure: Central Library and Capitol Hill Library

Hillsdale Library will reopen after completing a series of bond-related refresh projects.

New features:

  • Improved shelf height to create more space for people and better sight lines.
  • New furniture in the children’s area: kid’s chairs, soft colorful seating and fun animal chairs.
  • An engaging teen area with plush seating and a study table, lounge chairs and reading chairs (both with and without arms).
  • New, comfortable reading chairs (both with and without arms) as well as new lounge chairs in the adult area.
  • Automated materials handling that helps to get you your materials faster. 
  • A technology space with faster internet, computers, and an area for you to copy, fax and scan.
  • New carpet for an updated, inviting experience.

Holgate Library

Closed: December 5, 2022
Reopening: Summer 2024
Nearby libraries for services during closure: Belmont Library, Rockwood Library, Woodstock Library 

Holgate Library will reopen in a new building at the same location. The library will be triple the size of the current space for a total of 21,000 square feet — making it one of the largest libraries in Multnomah County. 

New features:

  • Multiple flexible event and meeting rooms
  • Updated technology and faster internet
  • Outdoor plaza for community members to relax and connect 
  • Community art installations
  • Solar panels to offset half of energy use
  • New collections tailored for Holgate patrons

Midland Library

Closed: December 23, 2022
Reopening: Summer 2024

Midland Library will be renovated and have more spaces for community use, faster internet, updated technology, and will add 6,000 square feet of space.

  • Event space
  • Dedicated teen space
  • Gathering Circle for community conversation and connection
  • New collections tailored for Midland patrons

North Portland Library

Closed: April 5, 2023
Reopening: Fall 2024
Nearby libraries for services during closure: Hollywood Library, Kenton Library, St. Johns Library

North Portland Library, the historic library home for the Black community, will be renovated and add 1500 square feet. It will house a new Black Cultural Center where people can gather, connect and celebrate Blackness.

  • New collections tailored for North Portland patrons

Library collections (books, media, etc.) will be affected by construction. Some items will be moved to storage and unavailable during building closures. You can always find up-to-date information about available materials through the library catalog. If the item you are looking for is not available to be checked out, take a look at our vast collection of e-books, audiobooks, and streaming media, all free to use with your library card.
