SUNY New Paltz Athletics, Wellness & Recreation Announces Spring 2021 Reopening Plan

1/17/2021 1:49:00 PM

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Department announced the reopening of the Athletic and Wellness Center, Elting Gym and Elting Pool, for student use only for the spring semester, effective Jan. 19.

***All students looking to use the facility during this time must be cleared through Health Services by presenting a negative PCR test before they will have access to use the facility through their ID Card**

After a successful fall semester that saw the Hawks open their facilities to students on Aug. 28 through Nov. 28, SUNY New Paltz had nearly 13,000 users with zero exposures in the facility, including no confirmed cases due to the facility. The Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Department staff worked diligently over the winter to come up with an even better plan that maximizes the use of the facility for students, while also abiding by New York State guidelines.

Along with the areas that were open last semester, which included the East and West Curve, Elting Gym (for workouts only), the dance studio and yoga room (for classes only), the department was excited to reopen the indoor track area and recreational table tennis, along with introducing new group exercise classes. All pre-registration through IM Leagues for any of the available areas in the AWC and Elting Gym will become available 48 hours before the sessions start time. For example, if students want to register for the West Curve from 10 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 23 the registration will become available on IM Leagues on Jan. 21 at 10 a.m.

The 1/9th mile indoor track will open for student use only for the spring semester. Like any other area in the facility, students must pre-register to use the track through IM Leagues. Usage will be broken down into 30-minute time slots that can serve up to three students at a time. Cubbies will be accessible for students to leave personal belongings. All students must first check in with monitor on duty prior to using the track, and must follow the running direction of the day, along with keeping their masks on at all times during their time slot. The four coves off the track will remain closed due to lack of supervision.

SUNY New Paltz will also have two table tennis tables accessible for use Monday through Thursday from 5-10 p.m. throughout the semester starting Feb. 1.  Students must pre-register for use and the front desk will have paddles and balls that students will need to check out to use unless they bring their own. They will be sanitized in between sessions by AWC monitors. Masks must be worn at all times in the facility and during recreational use of the table tennis tables. Along with recreational use, table tennis will also be included in the many intramural offerings this spring. More information will be released.

Group Exercise classes will begin Feb. 1, with most classes being taught live and being available virtually through Zoom. To attend a group exercise class students must pre-register through IM Leagues, while virtual classes will be "drop in" style. If students can't attend classes live, all virtual classes will be hosted on nphawks.com on Wellness and Recreation's virtual library.

The Hawks Wellness and Recreation group exercise virtual library offers a variety of classes taught by Hawks instructors to meet the students' many different fitness needs. To view the growing virtual library page, click here.

Additionally, the Wellness and Recreation Department is offering a personal training program through the VOLT app. Instructions on how to sign up will follow.

*As stated on page 51 of the College's reopening plan: "The Athletics and Wellness Center and Elting Gym will be open for recreational activities for students only each day for different periods of time."

Continue reading policy and procedures for the upcoming 2021 spring semester:

Like last semester, students must pre-register for each facility through IM Leagues with areas limited to 15 people to meet reopening guidelines. Students will not be allowed to bounce in between different areas of the gym and masks must be worn at all times.

A 10-minute buffer period was built in between sessions to allow students to leave their respective areas through the designated exit before the time session may enter. For students who have back-to-back sessions in the East and West curve, they must exit through that area's designated exit, re-enter through the front entrance and swipe back in with the front desk monitor before starting their next workout. Locker rooms will again remain closed and water stations will be available for water bottle refills only, drinking from water fountains is prohibited.
