Feerick Center for Social Justice
Feerick Center for Social Justice
The Center’s establishment reflects Fordham Law School’s long tradition of and commitment to legal education in the service of others and builds on Professor John D. Feerick’s contributions as Dean of the Law School (1982-2002) and currently as the Sidney C. Norris Professor of Law.
Upcoming Events
Where political power resides, How it is used to oppress marginalized communities, and What to do about it are the core inquiries of this exciting first-time workshop, which will examine how leaders organize communities and how collaborating with lawyers and other advocates advances local capacity to acquire and intentionally exercise power.
Because building movement power is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary effort, this workshop is for lawyers and non-lawyers. Advancing justice through structural change requires the skills, knowledge and self-understanding needed to challenge and disrupt entrenched power.
Participants should be prepared to discuss Why they aspire to lead and support grass-roots change.
At a time of authoritarian retrenchment, erosion of democratic principles, and blowback against hard-earned gains for historically discriminated-against groups, fighting system inequities and supporting community organizing have never been more important.
Discussion Topics:
- Brief history of social movements
- Theories of social change
- Principles of movement law
- Basic tenets of community organizing and resilient relationships
- Power mapping
- Strategies and tactics of movement lawyering
Facilitators:
The workshop will be presented by two highly experienced facilitators with deep and diverse experience in community organizing and movement lawyering.
Managing Director, Urban Justice Center's Safety Net Project
Activist & Doctoral Researcher, City University of New York
