Schlueter Breaks School Record as Warhawks compete in Wheaton Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's & women's swimming team competed in the 42nd annual Wheaton Invitational. The divers competed Thursday night, with the swimming events taking place over the past two days.

The men's team placed third out of the eight teams over the three-day Invitational, scoring 550 points. The women's team placed fifth in the Invitational, scoring 345 points. Conference opponent UW-Stevens Point men's & women's teams won the event, scoring 975.50 points & 903.50 points, respectively. 

Thursday (Diving) Recap:

Drew Schmitz (Appleton, Wis./North) finished first in both the 1-meter & 3-meter diving events on Thursday. In the 1 meter, Schmitz tallied a 381.20, topping second place by 39. In the 3-meter, Schmitz tallied 345.60 points, placing first overall. 

Daniel Farrell (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) & Edwin Villagomez (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) also competed in the diving events. Farrell placed 3rd overall in the 1-meter dive with a score of 341.40. Villagomez placed third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 249.95.

Friday Recap:

To start the match on Wednesday, both the men's & women's 200 free relay teams place in the Top 10. The Women's team, consisting of Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), Maren McDonnell (West Bend, Wis./East), & Ava Hennig (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove), placed 7th with a time of 1:43.42. The Men's team (Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan), Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford), and Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin)) placed 5th overall with a time of 1:25.78.

It was a busy night for Schlueter as well. He placed in the top 10 for the 200-yard IM, with a time of 2:00.32 for 8th place. Later on in the event, Schlueter almost broke his record in the 100 freestyle. Schlueter timed in at 45.93, only 0.43 seconds off from his own (and school) record.

Matt Johnson & Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) had top 10 touches in the 500-yard freestyle. Johnson finished the event in 4:48.92 for 5th place, while Weis touched 8th at 5:00.81.

In the Women's 200-yard backstroke, Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual) placed 5th overall with 2:13.94. Joining her in the top 10 was Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), touching with a time of 2:16.38 for 8th place.

UW-Whitewater had two people in the top 10 for the 200-yard backstroke, with Schmohe & Ethan Coons (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) touching less than a second apart for 7th & 8th place. Schmohe timed in at 1:58.96, with Coons at 1:59.93.

Connell picked up a bronze place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, touching with a time of 54.24 in the 100-yard freestyle. In the men's 100-yard freestyle, Bergman placed 8th with a time of 47.61.

In the 200 fly, Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest) placed 6th overall & Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) placed 3rd on the men's side. Malitz timed in at 2:23.63 & Ozog at 2:00.27.

Saturday Recap:

On Saturday, the 200-yard medley finals started with the women placing eighth & the men placing fourth in a very tight event. The women's team (Doczy, Logan Cunningham (Sun Prairie, Wis./East), Malitz, & Connell) timed in at 1:54.52. The men's team (Schmohe, Gramer, Bergman, Schlueter) timed a 1:35.26, 

Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual) picked up another podium finish on Saturday, placing third in the 400-yard IM. Wenszell timed in at 4:52.51 in the Final. On the men's side of the 400-yard IM, Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) placed second, with a time of 4:14.94. 

Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) placed in the top 5 for the 200-yard freestyle. Connell picked up 4th place with a time of 1:58.90.

A new school record was set on the men's side of the 200-yard freestyle. Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) touched in 1:40.60, besting his time by 0.34 seconds, & breaking the Warhawk school record by 0.23 seconds. Schlueter finished first overall in the event to go along with the record.

In the men's 100 butterfly, Ethan Coons (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford), & Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) finished 6th, 7th, & 8th, respectively. All Warhawk swimmers touched less than 0.5 seconds apart, with Coons at 53.09, Bergman at 53.13, & Ozog at 53.45.

Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) placed in the top 5 in the Finals for the 200-yard breaststroke. Phillips timed in at 2:11.60 for a 4th place finish. 

In the women's 100-yard backstroke, Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) picked up a silver medal. Doczy touched in 1:01.36, narrowly beating the third-place finisher by less than 2-tenths of a second.

In the 1650 freestyle., Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual) finished with a time of 18:53.12, placing 4th overall in the long race. On the men's side of the 1650, Hunter Hayberger (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) finished with a time of 17:07.57.

Next Up:

After the winter break, the Warhawks will return to the poll for a Triangular match with Lake Forest College & Lawrence University. Lake Forest will host the event this year on Saturday, January 20th.
