In Sungai Garong, West Kalimantan, #Indonesia, poor roads made transportation to buy fertilizer more costly than the fertilizer itself. Through our Women Forest Stewardship program and partnerships with local organizations, including the Montfortan Sintang Catholic Monastery, PT Pupuk Indonesia, and support from Google.org, the village now produces its own organic fertilizer, saving costs and improving crop yields. The ripple effect is now spreading, with neighboring villages adopting sustainable practices. Read more about KUPS Sungai Garong's impact: https://lnkd.in/gfYz7R_8

🌟 Exciting Update! 🌟 The USAID Digital Workforce Development team, through The Asia Foundation with support from Beyond Academia - UCBerkeley through USAID, was delighted to host the “Annual Scholar Retreat” from May 17-20, 2024, in Battambang, Cambodia. We were thrilled to welcome 83 participants, including DWD scholars, digital educators, career center coordinators, and partners. The retreat was opened with inspiring welcome remarks from the Rector of the National University of Battambang. Happy to report that the retreat created an inclusive and supportive atmosphere, promoted idea exchange, and reflection opportunities on scholars’ experiences with the USAID DWD scholarship program. Scholars also got a chance to interact with fellow participants across universities, build networks, do group activities together, better understand their career pathways and professional personalities, and have fun! #USAID #AnnualScholarRetreat #TheAsiaFoundation #Education #Innovation #Networking #Battambang #DigitalDevelopment #USAIDDWD

In the midst of the #pandemic, #Bangladeshi youth like Joy Sarker dared to demand transparency from their government. With support from our South Asia Governance Fund, the Media Resources Development Initiative helped men and women from #Rangpur, #Barishal, and #Jashore do just that. Despite challenges, their determination sparked change, prompting improvements and inspiring others to join the fight for accountability. Let’s continue empowering the next generation to uphold democratic values and demand the transparency they deserve. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gWRS-chw

Families in #SriLanka seeking to make changes to a birth certificate for a child with Differences in Sex Development (DSD) often face challenges marked by deep-rooted stigmas and binary understandings of sex. Working with Dr. Sumudu Seneviratne, one of Sri Lanka's few pediatric endocrinologists, we've facilitated clear birth certificates for several children, marking a crucial step in protecting their identity and rights. While project funding has ended, we're still raising awareness in key communities so families who need clear birth certificates can protect the ones closest to them. Our senior director for Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality, Jane S., just received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Adelaide for her contributions to women’s empowerment, gender equality, social inclusion, and other key development priorities. Congratulations, Jane, on this well-deserved honor!
I was so proud to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Adelaide today. The citation ended with, "Jane has received numerous accolades and honours in recognition of her outstanding contributions. Today, we extend that recognition in awarding the highest honour the University can bestow...admission to the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University." The Honourable Catherine Branson AC KC, Chancellor of the University, presented the award. I was thrilled to have my brother David and friends Sarah, Jan, Heather and Michael there with me and so many other friends cheering me on from afar. What a special day!
