State Senator Chris Jacobs announced a major investment of $1 million from the state to support People Inc.’s efforts to build a new Elmwood Health Center in North Buffalo.

People, Inc. is the largest provider of services for people with developmental disabilities in Upstate New York, but the Elmwood Health Center’s clientele of 5,000 patients, includes those with and without disabilities, and agency officials say they have a waiting list.

Sen. Jacobs presented the ceremonial check Friday, saying the money can be used to hire staff, and make other improvements to accommodate the growing demand for necessary medical and clinical services.

“People Inc. has excelled at providing quality healthcare, first for the developmentally disabled community, and then the general population, for the last twenty-five years at their Elmwood Health Center.”

People, Inc. officials said the $1 million amount will help meet some of their more immediate needs, while they apply for a $5-million Healthcare Transformational Grant to build a new  facility.

The Elmwood Health Center, which opened in 1994, provides a wide range of medical, rehabilitative therapy, and counseling services for children, teens, adults, and seniors.
