Who We Are

Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization helping local people save local land in the Pittsburgh Region. Protecting more than 4000 acres of green space across 41 different municipalities in Allegheny and Washington Counties, ALT works to protect land of significant value to our region’s unique scenic landscape, biodiversity, and water quality. Additionally, ALT protects land to improve quality of life for current and future generations by offering recreational and educational opportunities.

Why Conserve Land

ALT was founded in 1993 following a county-wide survey that revealed community members’ desire to preserve our natural environment. To this day, Allegheny County continues to lose 2,000 acres of green space to sprawling development every year. With a region experiencing a flat population growth rate at best, this development rate is fast outpacing our needs at the expense of one our region’s most critical assets: its close-to-home green space. By saving local land, ALT is able to address many of our region’s climate and resiliency challenges, such as clean air and water, land slide prevention, food security, and more.
