Get to know new SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras

Jim Malatras was named the 14th chancellor of the State University of New York on Aug. 21, 2020.

Malatras, who holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University at Albany, becomes the first SUNY alumnus appointed leader of the state university system. He has deep roots in the Hudson Valley and Ulster County and is a graduate of Ellenville High School.

A specialist in education policy, Malatras has held several high-ranking positions in New York State government, including:

  • President of SUNY Empire State College
  • President of the Rockefeller Institute of Government
  • Director of State Operations to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
  • Executive Director of Governor Cuomo’s New NY Education Reform Commission from 2012-2014
  • Chief of Staff for SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher
  • Legislative Director for Assemblymember Richard Brodsky
