Trip Description: The San Juan River from Sand Island to Mexican Hat travels past numerous historical, archeological, and geologic sites including ancestral Puebloan ruins, petroglyph panels, abandoned mines and buildings, red rock canyons and formations. 3-day Upper San Juan River Trip

  • Thursday, October 6 - Meet the group at the Sand Island group campground in Bluff, Utah. You have the option to shuttle from Durango (2.5 hours) or drive yourself.
  • Friday, October 7 –While boats are being rigged participants can take a short hike to the Sand Island Petroglyph Panel and enjoy morning coffee.
  • Saturday, October 8 – The San Juan winds past numerous historical and archeological sites as it travels past Butler Wash. The highlight of these sites is the River House, a large ancestral Puebloan ruin. After Comb Wash, we enter San Juan Canyon. A few class II rapids dot the canyon as the red rock walls tower above.
  • Sunday, October 9 – As we leave San Juan Canyon we enter the Mexican Hat Syncline. The river meanders seven more miles to the take-out at Mexican Hat. After a quick load-up in the early afternoon, we will start the three-hour drive back and arrive in Durango by late afternoon or early evening.
  • Sunday bonus! Stop at Fenceline Cider in Mancos, CO, on the way back and enjoy the exclusive Old Fort Cider crafted exclusively by using fruit from the Old Fort Lewis campus in Hesperus, CO. There will be live music and food at this free event. More info here.
