Google is sharing the wealth this holiday season, with a plan to donate millions of dollars to benefit students in special education at schools across the country.

The Internet giant said that it will donate $1 for every purchase made using Android Pay through Dec. 31. Google indicated it will give up to a million dollars total.

Separately, Google is also asking users to chip in, with a special link added to the company’s search homepage on Dec. 1 — known as Giving Tuesday — prompting visitors to “support special needs teachers.” The company said its charitable arm, Google.org, will match donations from users up to $1 million.

The efforts are part of Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities, a broader initiative the company announced earlier this year that’s offering up millions in funding to groups that are using technology to increase independence for those with disabilities.

Donations will go toward special education projects posted on DonorsChoose.org, a website that allows public school educators to request funding for classroom projects or materials.

“Teachers spend nearly $500 out of their own pocket each year to outfit their classrooms with enriching projects and programs. Since each student learns differently, let’s support special needs classrooms across the country to make education more inclusive for every kid,” Sherice Torres, marketing director for Android Pay, wrote in a posting announcing the effort.

The commitments come in addition to nearly $720,000 Google has already distributed over the past month to fund more than 700 projects posted on DonorsChoose.org benefiting students with disabilities in seven communities.
