Adopting and Evaluating Mechanical Ventilation in Dairy Barns: A Calculator Guide
TOPIC: Animal Welfare: Ventilation
Nesli Akdeniz Onuki (bio) ↗️
Livestock Controlled Environments Extension Specialist, Assistant Professor
University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension
In this presentation, Nesli Akdeniz will introduce a new online calculator designed to support ventilation decisions in dairy barns. There are two versions of the tool. The first version of the calculator, available at go.wisc.edu/coolcows, is for dairy producers considering a transition from natural to mechanical ventilation ↗️. It estimates the number of fans needed, the required inlet size, and the projected monthly energy use.
The second version of the calculator, available at go.wisc.edu/coolcows2, is intended for assessing the performance of existing mechanical ventilation systems ↗️. Based on the selected region, the calculator retrieves weather data and estimates monthly energy consumption, which can then be compared with the actual utility bill. If the numbers do not align, it may indicate underperforming fans due to aging or improperly sized air inlets.
The presentation will conclude with a comparison of weather data from 2000–2004 and 2020–2024, highlighting how ventilation needs have changed over the past two decades in northern/central and southern Wisconsin.
