01) Deon Jackson

Former Berkeley County Superintendent Deon Jackson has formally filed a lawsuit against the local school district, school board members and his replacement, Dr. Anthony Dixon.

Former Berkeley County School Superintendent Deon Jackson recently filed a lawsuit against the local school district, school board members and his successor (Dr. Anthony Dixon) on the basis of plotting to have him removed from his position during a Nov. 15 public meeting.

Jackson's filing alleges that one-time colleagues Mac McQuillin, Sally Wofford, Kathy Littleton and Michael Ramsey all gathered during private meetings prior to the complainant's dismissal, which reportedly violates South Carolina's Freedom of Information Act.

These in-person and telephonic meetings, it was noted, constituted "illegal" sessions, per the lawsuit, as they comprised a quorum despite the absence of newly-elected board members who were later sworn in on Nov. 15.

Reports also state that Jackson was apprised by the board's plans of firing him via a phone call placed by McQuillin the Sunday prior to the Nov. 15 meeting. In the conversation, the board member offered the then superintendent an opportunity to resign beforehand.

Jackson was advised to take him up on the recommendation to avoid an "embarrassing" situation and risk securing future employment.

McQuillin explained his side of argument in a Nov. 23 statement that detailed the school board's lack of "confidence" and "trust" in Jackson.

The erstwhile county official is asking for compensatory and punitive damages, along with coverage for attorney fees and related expenses.
