AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL*

(“O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”)

Music written by Samuel A. Ward (1847–1903)

Words written by Katharine Lee Bates (1859–1929)

Selected stanzas

O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain.

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea.

O beautiful for pilgrim feet

Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat

Across the wilderness.

America! America!

God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law.

COLORADO COLLEGE ALMA MATER

(“O Colorado College Fair”)

Words and music written in 1953 by Charles Hawley ’54 and Professors Earl Juhas and Albert Seay

O Colorado College fair, We sing our praise to you; Eternal as the Rockies, that form our western view; Your loyal sons and daughters will always grateful be; The college dear to all our hearts is our C.C.

O Colorado College fair, Long may your fame be known; May fortune smile upon you, and honor be your own; Our Alma Mater always, Your loyal children we; Together let us face the future, Hail C.C.

Audience: Please join us in singing.

It was published in 1895 to national acclaim.

*In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates was a visiting professor of English literature in Colorado College’s Summer Session. Bates and a group of faculty members traveled by prairie wagon and mules to the summit of Pikes Peak. There, inspired by the magnificent panorama, the poet conceived the initial verses of “America, the Beautiful.”

Dear Class of 2023,

Congratulations! You have reached one of your life’s great milestones — your graduation from Colorado College.

You achieved this while building a thriving community – even when obstacles were thrown in your way. The global pandemic disrupted your first academic year, and you were dispersed. It may have felt like your friendships would never gel, or that you’d never find your footing at CC. But you carried on, through Zoom classes and student organization meetings, and connected as meaningfully as possible.

And then, once you could be on campus again, you made every moment count.

Perhaps because of those early challenges, yours is a class that understands the importance of relationships, of supporting one another, and of caring for one another. You understand the power in collaborating and creating change.

You successfully rallied for more comprehensive mental health services. You helped CC have one of the highest college voter turnout rates in the country. You contributed to the greater Colorado Springs community, cleaning up creeks, court watching, mentoring middle schoolers, and working at soup kitchens.

Here on campus, you cheered for the Tigers on fields, courts, and the hockey rink; you were awed by your friends’ dance, music, theater, and comedy performances; you were moved by their writing and inspired by their art.

You were transformed in the classroom and during field study, in discussions and experiences that pushed you. Guided by brilliant professors who dedicated themselves to life-changing teaching, you expanded your world, your mind, and your horizons.

You are the new leaders who will speak up and work together to address climate change, act against racism, bridge political polarization, and advocate for mental health. You will take all that you learned at CC into the world.

Today, you join our community of CC alumni. You built lifelong friendships here, and you will continue to travel, explore, and have fun together.

We are proud of you and excited for your future. Colorado College is always your home, a place and a community where you belong. Keep in touch, and come back often. We’ll be so excited to see you!

Sincerely,

HONORARY

Mike Edmonds is senior vice president at Colorado College, where he has been employed since 1991. Most recently, he was acting co-president of the college, and as the first Black president in the college’s 147-year history, he helped lead the campus through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to assuming the presidency, Edmonds served as Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs.

Originally from Clarksville, Tennessee, Edmonds holds a B.A. in Speech and Theatre, an M.A. in Higher Education, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Mississippi, where he was inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame, the School of Education Hall of Fame, and most recently the inaugural College of Liberal Arts Hall of Fame.

As an educator, Edmonds routinely taught courses for the Colorado College Economics and Business and Theatre and Dance departments focused on business communications, theatre appreciation in Canada, public speaking, drama, and rhetoric. He has served as a Summer Forensics Institute faculty member at the University of Iowa, teaching forensics to high school teachers and students. He was also inducted into the National Speech and Debate Association Hall of Fame.

Edmonds has been an active volunteer in both Colorado and Mississippi and has served on more than 25 boards and committees for organizations including Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Great West American Cancer Society, University of Mississippi Chancellor’s Trust Foundation, the Colorado Springs Airport, Memorial Hospital, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and the National Speech and Debate Association. He is also the recipient of numerous awards and honors from Emory University, Uplift Foundation, American Cancer Society, NAACP, Urban League of the Pikes Peak Region, Tutmose Academy, and more. He was recently elected as a Trustee of El Pomar Foundation, one of the largest and most impactful philanthropic foundations in Colorado.

149th ACADEMIC YEAR | 2023 COMMENCEMENT 8

HONORARY

Robert G. Moore is retiring this year as senior vice president for Finance and Administration, chief financial officer, and chief operating officer of Colorado College, concluding a nearly 50-year professional career serving state government and higher education administration, all in Colorado.

He joined CC in January 2010 and was an instrumental force in the unprecedented transformation of the CC campus. Among the projects completed during his tenure are the expansion and renovation of Tutt Library, the largest net-zero energy use academic library in the nation; the Adam F. Press Fitness Center and renovation of El Pomar Sports Center; the Ed Robson Arena; the Mike and Barbara Yalich Student Services Center; and the East Campus Housing Community. He also successfully managed the alliance agreements with the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and Colorado Public Radio for KRCC.

Moore was acting co-president of the college for a year beginning in July 2020 during the height of the global pandemic. He helped the campus community and Board of Trustees navigate the unknowns of the COVID-19 virus while preserving the best CC education experience possible and managing the financial impacts to the college ensuring there were no layoffs or staff furloughs.

He is a national leader in his field, serving as chair of the National Association of College and University Business Officers and president of the Western Association of College and University Business Officers. He serves on the Board of Directors of Colorado Public Radio, is a past member of the Board of Directors for University Hospital, and served on the Douglas County School Board.

Moore is Vice President Emeritus from the University of Colorado where he served as the Vice President for Finance and Administration. He also served as Vice President for Finance and Operations at the Colorado School of Mines, Deputy Executive Director at the Colorado Department of Higher Education, and Staff Director for the Joint Budget Committee of the Colorado General Assembly.

HONORARY

From the journal of Hilaree Janet Nelson, 11-2-1992

Hilaree Janet Nelson died September 26, 2022, skiing from the Himalayan summit of Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest mountain. She was born on Dec 13, 1972, to Stanley and Robin Nelson, and was the youngest of three children. Hilaree credited family boat trips and skiing at Stevens Pass for sparking her passion and desire to explore the wilderness.

Hilaree studied biology at Colorado College where she became not just a student, but a student of life. She learned to question herself and the world around her. The friends she made and the lessons she learned lasted a lifetime.

After graduation, she moved to Chamonix, France, and began her career in the mountains, winning the European Extreme Ski Championships and taking her first big mountain trip to India. Hilaree was one of the most prolific ski mountaineers of her generation, the captain of The North Face Athlete Team, known for making artful turns in improbable places, with dozens of first descents from atop major and lesser-known peaks. Her perseverance and passion for exploring the mountains earned her recognition as National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year in 2018.

Hilaree settled in Telluride, Colorado, where her most fulfilling role was being a mom to her boys Quinn and Grayden. Her time with them was spent coaching sports, exploring the mountains, surfing, rock climbing, playing board games and cards, and loving them with all her heart.

Hilaree led her life with kindness and humility. She inspired people and athletes of all levels, always encouraging them to reach their own personal summits, whatever that may be.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong with wandering, taking risks and not settling for things that don’t satisfy you…I want it to be true that I can survive outside the traditional structure.”

HONORARY

Robin Wilson is an Emeritus Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Open University, U.K., where he produced teaching material for thousands of adult students. A former Fellow of Keble College, Oxford University, he was also professor of geometry at Gresham College, London, founded in 1597 to present free lectures to the general public.

He received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oxford, and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania for a thesis in number theory; his interests then switched to combinatorial mathematics and graph theory and to their historical development. He later earned an Open University degree in Humanities with Music and served as President of the British Society for the History of Mathematics.

Robin Wilson has written and edited over 50 books on mathematics and its history, including five books with mathematicians at Colorado College. Widely admired for communicating and popularizing his subject, he has received awards from the Mathematical Association of America for his “outstanding expository writing” and the Institute of Combinatorics

and its Applications for “outreach in combinatorics,” and his writings range from Lewis Carroll’s mathematical world to sudoku puzzles.

His deep connection with Colorado College dates from 1981, when he was a featured speaker at a Rocky Mountain Mathematical Association meeting at the college. This led to many further visits to teach 36 blocks, mainly in mathematics but also in the Departments of History (on Isaac Newton) and Music (on Music & Mathematics and the Gilbert & Sullivan Operas), inspiring generations of CC students through his love of teaching, learning, and outrageous puns. He also performed regularly with the CC Choir and the early music group Collegium Musicum. Robin is grateful to the college for four decades of delightful visits to Colorado and for the many long-term friendships that he has developed here.
