Lisa Johnson
Adult Honoree

Lisa Johnson started experiencing symptoms of arthritis as a child. As a result, she missed out on a lot of typical childhood activities. She often had to stay inside while other kids were outside playing, and missed school when she couldn’t walk. Her family knew right away that it was arthritis, as other members of her family had experienced similar symptoms. Her grandma was in a wheelchair at the end of her life and her dad had to have his knee replaced because of this painful disease.

Now as an adult, wife, and mother of three boys, her pain has become more manageable, but she does experience ongoing aches in her knees. Sometimes her hands hurt, and her neck and shoulders are frequently sore. She worries when her son says his legs hurt, wondering “does he have arthritis too?”.

Despite the daily challenges of living with arthritis, Lisa has participated in the Jingle Bell Run Seattle for 13 years and volunteered on the Jingle Bell Run Seattle Planning Committee for the last five years. Knowing this fundraising event will help fund programs and research to help make sure no kid gets stuck inside with a doctor’s note due to arthritis has inspired her to put on her knee brace and keep going.

Lisa feels so honored to serve as the Adult Honoree for the 35th Anniversary of the Jingle Bell Run Seattle. The holiday season has always been her favorite time of year. She enjoys seeing everyone together in downtown Seattle strutting festive costumes while supporting those living with arthritis or a related disease. She is so grateful for each person who runs, walks, or volunteers. Every person plays a critical role in supporting the people in our community who live with this painful disease.

Isabelle Bock
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Youth Honoree

Isabelle was first diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) when she was 2 years old. Her parents first noticed something was wrong while visiting the Seattle Aquarium for Mother’s Day. Izzy started limping and then simply stopped walking. This was very unusual for their rather energetic daughter. They immediately sought advice from her primary care physician and within two weeks had an appointment with a rheumatologist at Seattle Children’s. Since being diagnosed, Izzy has been to the operating room twice for steroid injections and is now receiving weekly shots at home in an attempt to prevent her immune system from attacking her joints.

Despite the many doctors’ appointments, blood draws, and procedures, Izzy has remained an active and loving child with an infectious giggle who has not let arthritis prevent her from exploring new activities. She continues to enjoy being outside playing soccer, camping, and burying her toes in the sand at the beach. Izzy has recently enrolled in a class at Seattle Gymnastics Academy and is looking forward to starting classes. She is asking to try kayaking for her next adventure. In addition, she is an enthusiastic Sounders fan, and loves cheering on Stefan Frei at each home game.

Through the Arthritis Foundation, Izzy has met many other children who are also learning to live with arthritis. With the help of these children, their families and the foundation, Izzy and her family have started to build a community in which they can share and learn from one another. Izzy is honored to serve as Youth Honoree for the 35th Anniversary of the Jingle Bell Run Seattle to help raise awareness for arthritis, because Kids Get Arthritis Too.
