Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens

Two Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens senior design projects will be recognized during next week's Senior Award Ceremony. Team "Mycoremediation of Heavy Metals”, won the David and GG Farber Societal Impact Award. The team, advised by Prof. Tsan-Liang Su, was selected from all senior design projects based on their use of technology resulting in a positive societal impact. The team of environmental engineering students developed a process that utilizes several species of oyster mushroom to remove lead, copper, chromate, and zinc for implementation in groundwater remediation. Team "Bobby Wagner Walk and 107th Street Pier Restoration" won the "Most Outstanding Project in Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering Award". They were selected from all CEOE projects based on their technical design, professionalism, and demonstration of teamwork. The team of civil engineering students, advised by Prof. Weina Meng and mentored by Katherine Hansen, William Gilroy and Craig Cavanaugh of Stantec, redesigned the Walk to better serve present and future needs of the community. Last week, the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens senior undergraduates participated in the Stevens Institute of Technology Innovation Expo by showcasing their Senior Design Projects. These projects are a great way to introduce realistic engineering design, construction, and project management to our students, which provides them with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s competitive workforce. Congratulations all on a job well done! Cheng Chen, an associate professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens is advancing human-made energy reservoirs with an eye toward net-zero carbon emissions in the future. The renewable energy project, called “High-Temperature Testing of Proppants for EGS and Simulation of Electromagnetic Fracture Mapping Using Electrically-Conductive Proppants,” has earned Chen a $1.52 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens, along with the campus chapters of ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), SEEPS (Stevens Environmental Engineering Professional Society), SNAME (Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers) and Chi Epsilon (the Civil Engineering Honors Society), had a wonderful time hosting the Second Annual CEOE Networking Event. We welcomed more than 170 alumni, industry professionals, faculty and department undergraduate students. The event promoted professional networking to create partnerships, opportunities, and strengthen our community while expanding our unique traditions of excellence.
